When it comes to international trade, the marine industry is the one of the most effective links. Ocean-going vehicles are often the only method used for transportation of large volume of commodities and finished products.

Companies into dry bulk shipping are responsible for transporting homogeneous bulk cargo's by bulk vessels. These vessels are specially designed for carrying homogeneous, non-liquid items such as coal, cement, lumber, ores or grain. Dry bulk cargo's are always shipped in large quantities. They can be easily stowed in a single hold with less or no risk of damage to the cargo.

Some of the factors that affect the dry bulk shipping companies are demand and supply of commodities and world economic growth. For instance, if construction activities increase in the global arena, the seaborne trade of dry bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore will increase.

Globally, China accounts for the major share of imports and exports of dry bulk commodities which means, slowdown in the development of the economy can impact the dry bulk shipping industry to a great extent. Even Brazil and Australia impact this industry as they are the major exporters of iron and coal.

This industry is one of the three main sub-industries of maritime transportation. Dry bulk can be divided into minor as well as major bulks. Major bulk including coal, iron, ore and grain makes up the largest group of dry bulk cargos whereas minor bulks are made up of forest products, alumina, cement, fertilizers and steel products. As far as seaborne trade volumes are concerned, major bulk trades are the dominant influence, including coal, grains and iron ore.

  • Different types of vessels are employed in dry bulk shipping, depending on the trade routes, volume of cargo and a port’s geographical limitations.
  • Cape size vessels are used at large ports across the globe mainly for transporting coal or iron ore at long haul routes
  • Panamax vessels are used for carrying minor bulks, especially coal and iron ore. These ships are mostly ‘gearless’ which means there is no cargo handling equipment on board.
  • In a large number of global trade routes, Supra max vessels are used for carrying grains and minor bulk. This vessel is a subset of Handy max vessel and it offers cargo loading and unloading flexibility with onboard cranes. Today, many companies are opting for Ultramax-class carriers instead of Supramax. They are not only larger (capacity of 57,000 to 66,000) but also fuel-efficient with on-gear cranes.
  • On more regional trade routes, other sizes like, Newcastle max, Kamsar max,, Setouch max, Dunkirk max, Seaway max are used.

When it comes to the demand for dry bulk carrier capacity, it can be determined by underlying demand for commodities that are transported in dry bulk carriers. This in turn is influenced by global economy trends.

There are various reputed cargo services in Mumbai that are also into the shipping and handling of dry bulk commodities. So, make sure you do some research before finalizing a shipping company for this purpose.
