Can you go horseback riding in the winter in Utah?

When most people think of getting outdoors during the winter in Utah, they picture snow skiing or snowboarding. While skiing and snowboarding are certainly Utah’s most well-known and popular winter activities, there are some other great options worth trying. One of the best ways to get out and see the mountains is on horseback. Most people don’t think of horseback riding in Utahas a winter activity, but the weather can make for a memorable ride. Going when during the cooler months of the year offers the chance to see incredible views and different wildlife, such as bald eagles that migrate during the winter, than you can see during the summer.

What preparations do you need to make for riding horses in the winter?

It will be pretty similar to any other outdoor activity done during the winter. Dressing in layers with warm clothing is the first step. Remember that you can always take layers off if you get too warm. Make sure to bring gear such as gloves, hat, and any other items to make sure you are as warm as possible. When the sun comes out the reflection from the snow can be bright so bring either sunglasses or goggles to keep the glare under control. Of course bringing cameras or binoculars is also a must. It’s also good to bring a small bag of emergency essentials such as GPS system, food, and water just to be safe. If you are doing a tour, like the ones offered by Rocky Mountain Outfitters, they will have many of these items with them already.

What can you see while horseback riding during the winter in Utah?

By hitting the mountains during the winter, there can be a lot more to see than some would expect. Once it’s cool enough many animals will come out looking for food. Some of the animals such as deer, elk, and moose will move around more during the day. By getting out during the warmer hours of the day allows them to stay sheltered from the cold winter nights. As mentioned earlier there is also a high probability of seeing bald eagles that migrate throughout the winter as well.

What other winter activities are there to do during the winter in Heber Valley?

Guided horseback riding in Utah isn’t the only winter activity to do around Park City and the Heber Valley. Rocky Mountain Outfitters also features horse-drawn sleigh rides, tubing, sleigh riding, and snowshoeing.
