There are always a range of diverse ways to explore a destination and get to its heart and soul, but one of the most satisfying and exciting ways to do it is by water. All over the world, water based holidays on lakes, rivers and canals can open your eyes to a whole new perspective on a place, and uncover scenery you never even knew existed. One perfect example of an absolutely ideal to explore this way is on one of the increasingly popular barge holidays in Scotland.

There are several different canals you can traverse, but the Caledonian Canal is quite rightly one of the most famous. With short stretches of man-made canals linking the famous Scottish Lochs, the location is nothing short of breathtaking.

Discover Many Ways to Explore the Caledonian Canal

As well as enjoying the Scottish canals from the comfort and luxury of a barge, there are also many other ways for you to explore the area around these spectacular waterways.

Cycling and Walking

There are some excellent towpaths bordering the Caledonian Canal, which are ideal for exploring on two wheels. Barge holidays in Scotland usually offer the opportunity for you to borrow a bike (kept on-board) to cycle the towpath that runs alongside the canals and lochs. This is a lovely way to soak up the scenery and get a real appreciation for the stunning Scottish countryside. If cycling is not for you, you can also take a stroll or a leisurely jog along the towpath and immerse in the sights of the wonderful Caledonian Canal.

Paddling and Fishing

If you're looking to appreciate the canal from a different perspective altogether, then why not try paddling under your own steam? Scotland’s canals are safe and perfect whether you're an absolute beginner at the activity or an avid paddler wanting to improve your skills. It's a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the scenery and the canals and lochs offer endless possibilities for on-the-water enthusiasts.

Keen fishermen will also find lots to enjoy in these lovely waterways. Some companies that offer barge holidays in Scotland include the opportunity to try some fishing on the itinerary. The Caledonian Canal and the many lochs it passes through are ideal spots for fishing salmon, trout and pike - providing a peaceful excursion and a lot of fun.

The many delights of the beautiful Caledonian Canal can be appreciated in a host of different ways, depending on what your interests are and how you want to spend your leisure time on your water-based holiday. Enjoy it on two feet, two wheels, with rod in hand or simply by sitting back and indulging in the luxury of one of the excellent barge holidays in Scotland designed to introduce you to this fabulous part of the world.
