The Fashion, Apparel and Design Club at Vanguard High School recently hosted a fashion show that drew nearly 100 attendees and will support a local help agency.

According to organizer Danielle Tarigha, clothing was loaned by TJ Maxx, jewelry was provided by Premier Designs and food was catered by PDQ. She said the event raised about $400, a portion of which will be donated to Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection.

The event had an overarching theme of Back-to-School, but there were six sub-themes: Fall and Winter, Monochrome and Color-blocking, Throwback and Vintage, Textures and Prints, and Formal wear. The final last theme was Spirit Week, and the club announced dress up days for homecoming during the show. The event also included musical performances by VHS students and a routine by the Vanguard Step Team.

The club is sponsored by the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing in California. There are eight hundred FIDM fashion clubs around the nation, according to Danielle.

She said the local club’s "main goal and purpose is to promote body positivity and self-esteem. I think, and I am sure my fellow members of fashion club can agree, that a major flaw in the fashion industry is its exclusivity and lack of proper representation of the average person. Not everyone is stick thin and perfect like the models we see in magazines. Our fashion club is all about helping teens learn to love and appreciate themselves for who they are and learn to identify their own sense of style."

The club is for students who are interested in fashion design, modeling, photography, illustration, makeup, management and marketing.

The club will host another fashion show in early February, with more of an international theme showcasing pieces from different countries. At least 10 percent of proceeds from that show will go towards the Wariebi Academy in Monrovia, Liberia.

"The school is very focused on becoming more modern and technology focused so we will be raising money to provide the school with laptops, tablets and basic school supplies. Also, we have a personal connection with administration at the school so there is no middleman organization. The money is going directly from fashion club to the school," Danielle said.
