It is very important to understand the entire concept behind cholesterol before starting a regime with cholesterol free food. Cholesterol is something we should definitely keep an eye on as most men and women across the world have unhealthy and unwarranted levels of cholesterol. This cause buildup of plaque, cholesterol and fatty deposits on the walls of arteries and may lead to blood vessel and heart diseases. Cardiovascular disease accounts for a large percentage of the deaths taking place worldwide every year. Cholesterol levels should be tested by people between 40-50 with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure or those who have excess fat around the waist. Those with limited physical activity and smoking habits should also get themselves tested for cholesterol in this age group. Cholesterol is a soft substance and blood cholesterol makes up approximately 80% of the total cholesterol count in the human body while the remainder, i.e. 20% comes from the food that we eat or dietary cholesterol. Cholesterol is transported throughout the blood by lipoproteins. LDL or low density lipoproteins deliver cholesterol to the body and this is known as bad cholesterol as too much of this can build up on the artery walls. On the other hand, good cholesterol is equated with high density lipoproteins or HDL which carries LDL away from the artery walls. HDL can also prevent blood clot causing ruptures and smoothen blood flow. Cholesterol levels are mostly connected to dietary fat and there are several foods that raise LDL levels including foods containing trans fat and saturated fat. Saturated fats are found in fatty meats, fatty milk products, egg yolk, shrimp, butter, lard, snacks, fast foods and other hydrogenated vegetable oil products.

Foods that lower LDL cholesterol levels include sprouts, pears, oatmeal, kidney beans, fish containing omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed, soybean oil, barley, almonds and walnuts. When it comes to consuming fat free margarine, you’re better off with Nutralite instead.
