Nurturing Better Managers And Leaders

The world is complex and it is changing rapidly. Organisations, too, are complex, and they need to respond to this changing world. Doing so requires good managers and leaders. But how does an organisation develop good managers and leaders? That is the central question that our practitioners in Leadership & Management address. The answers are never exactly the same – every organisation has different challenges and strategic goals, and therefore they need to develop managers and leaders who can meet these challenges and goals.

Online Simulations

Fair Process Leadership

Fair Process Leadership, in its simplest essence, is the way of leading through asking questions, rather than by telling. While a majority of the time is spent in asking, leaders must know when it is appropriate to ask and when to tell.

Our simulation, Rich Way (also known as Fair Process), is designed to allow participants to see:

  • How fair process is distinguished from fair outcomes
  • How to use all five process elements of Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Execution and Evaluation
  • How to shift to a mindset of involvement
  • The different methods of communication and strategy
  • The diversity of views, and the importance and impact of these views in a changing business context, and
  • How to achieve superior business results by applying more systematic thinking about the process used

This simulation builds on work done by INSEAD professors Michael Pich and Ludo Van der Heyden.

Managing Stakeholders

Managing Stakeholders

Stakeholders are defined as "any individual or group who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organisation’s objectives." They contribute toward the value creation, knowledge, insight and support of a business’ objectives and activity execution if their consensus can be obtained through tactful negotiation.

In our simulation, Hydro Laos, you will experience:

  • How to work within the given cultural and political environments to ensure that both the organisation’s and stakeholders’ needs are addressed and met successfully and optimally.
  • How to manage stakeholder relationships through a cycle of Analysis, Mapping, Engagement, and Continuous Assessment.
  • How to assess what goes on below the ‘iceberg’, and to read and respond to the different stakeholders’ social, emotional and personal needs and agendas.

Maarten Nijhoff Asser, an intercultural expert, designed this simulation with the Ososim team. He is co-author of the book, "The Global M&A Tango," (2010) with Frons Trompenaars.

Strategy Execution

Strategic execution is the task of getting people to operationalise the strategy. It is setting to do what was planned. Within this framework, a significant portion of the work involves coming out with the strategy, communicating the strategy, aligning the individual roles, managing the relevant activities within the overall projects, making decisions, and reporting progress.

Our simulation, Strategic Feat, offers you the opportunity to experience executing a strategy under the pressure of time and engagement, in a safer and more congenial environment.

You will see in particular how:

  • Successful execution involves the skills of change management as well as project management
  • Stakeholder support is obtained through leveraging the influence network
  • Effective communication is a two-way process of giving and gathering information, and
  • Risks and trade-offs are managed during the implementation

Bettina Buchel drew from her book "Smarter Execution", written together with Xavier Gilbert and Rhoda Davidson, when designing this simulation. She is currently the Professor of Strategy and Organisation at IMD, Switzerland.

Virtual Teams

Virtual teams consist of individuals or groups of workers who are either geographically or organisationally dispersed. Even though managing these types of team members requires new ways of working through technology and processes, there has been little focus given to the role of either virtual team leaders or their members.

Our Atlantic Crossing simulation provides for this focus on the cooperation and coordination in a virtual team. It will enable your learning teams to see and experience better how to:

  • Share information
  • Collaborate to achieve a shared purpose
  • Communicate and coordinate in a networked world

Thank for sharing such informative article. I was here to find information to prepare presentation on "Qualities of a Good Leader" I think we should also consider "Decision Making" which is one of qualities of a Good Leader. Thanks & Regards Jiya Dave
