All about Itineraries, Accommodations and Number of Days to reach Everest Base Camp

In general, there are 2 itineraries for Everest Base Camp Trek. One including the Gokyo Lakes which is about a 19 days plan and the other is without the Gokyo Lakes and takes 15 days to complete.

The numbers of days mentioned above are the standard planned itineraries and a person may take more or less depending on the ability and rest days for acclimatization.

The 15 days plan starts with your arrival in Kathmandu, The next day a flight to Lukla & trek to Phakding, then to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp and return in the same route with a hike to Kala Patthar. The 15 days, trekking option is the most preferred among the trekking enthusiasts for Mount Everest Base Camp Trek.

In the 19 days trek till Namche the itinerary remains the same, then it goes via Thame, Lumde, Gokyo, Gokyo Ri – Thagnag, Chola Pass-Dzongla, Lobuche, from here the itinerary is the same as above plan.

The additional experience in the 19 days trek is you get to see the pristine and beautiful Gokyo Lakes, the fresh water lake system on the highest peaks. Also get to cross 3 major 5000 meter passes, namely, Renjhola, Gokyo Ri and Chola.

The 19 days plan is also known as Everest Base Camp Full Circuit Trek.

You take either the 15 days or the 19 days trekking options, you will find many tea houses in the route. In each of the milestones / villages, you will have options for a tea house accommodation. You will be happy to know that each of the places has good number of tea houses. Therefore, accommodation in any day is not at all a challenge. These are typical wooden floored houses. They offer twin share rooms and common bathrooms. In some places, additional comfort facilities are available. Most of the accommodations offer an OK bed and blankets.

All of these tea houses serve food and they offer a number of choices including veg and non veg options. You can get food and accommodation throughout the trip is it in 19days or 15 days options and you will not face any problem for this anywhere in this route as long as you are reaching the planned milestones as per the itineraries.

Please note, in most places mobiles will work and internet is available. The tea houses have solar power systems for charging your phones and gadgets.

Difficulty level for this trek:

This is a trek to the base of the world's highest peak and needless to say it is a challenging task.

The altitude gain and cold weather are major challenges. In higher altitude, the effort and energy needs always double.Every day one needs to trek for 6 to 7 hours on an average. In some places there are stiff inclines and some hikes.

There are many extremely fit people who fail to complete the trek; many so called obese people have successfully completed the trek, even a lot of people who are not so young have also managed to complete the trek. This only confirms that to be able to complete the Mount Everest Base Camp Trek, it takes something more than your physical fitness level. The person who loves to trek, enjoys trekking for long hours, enjoys being present amidst the nature, has good patience and motivation will always stand the highest chance to complete the trek.

Having said that, each individual is different and each of them will respond in a different way as per their body. The trek is going to be challenging and each individual will make their own adjustments to meet the challenges.
