Composing our personal stories may be the most vulnerable kind of writing we can do. We fear being laughed at, rejected, or that our words will be followed by silence. For this particular reason we often remain quiet.

During the writing process I've discovered 6 important steps to Help me tell my story: I hope they help you too.

1. Tap into your emotions.

Your story won’t resonate with others if it has a lack of emotion. This I discovered when writing the very first draft of my own story. So take out your paper and pen and jot down some key feelings that you simply associate with your life to present. Then write something about each feeling and also the story behind and around it.

2. List the turning factors.

People often make the mistake of beginning with their earliest childhood memories and moving through their own story chronologically. Rather than starting with beginning of your life you can create a list of your life’s key turning points: those instances when you were standing at a crossroad and the path you chose marked a significant change in your life.

3. Write everything down.

It might not seem like much at that time but it’s amazing how one memory comes from another and enables you to go deeper into your own story.

4. Use the actual senses.

The one thing that will help explore long forgotten memories is by using your senses. As a person recalling events, try to consider the smells, the tastes as well as the sounds that accompany all of them. Not only will this assist you to remember details, it will even enrich your writing.

5. Discover the theme.

Once you have compiled several significant scenes, most likely you will see a theme rising. Your theme is the actual central question driving your own story. The ability to transport this theme through the actual sequence of events you've gathered is what will turn your own scenes into a tale. You may discover several themes. That’s okay; it’s likely you will see one that stands in front of others.

6. Tell a story whatever your story.

You have your theme and numerous scenes; you’ve gone through the box of tissues along the way of exploring your feelings, but have you told a tale? As you begin to pull it all together, focus on your readers. What about your story: will it interact with them? The best stories are ultimately the ones that connect with the reader the most.

In my opinion this process of telling your story is one of the most rewarding and clarifying steps you can take for yourself, and in relating to others.

So step into that state of discomfort and write that story. It will bring freedom and meaning to your life. You have enough time. Get busy.
