Root canal is a surgical procedure of teeth to repair damaged or infected teeth. In the process the damaged area of the tooth is removed. The part is cleaned up and disinfected and plugged in with a filler material.

Root canal procedure is necessary for your tooth if the pulp in the tooth is damaged and has developed a crack, cavity or because of the side effects of repeated dental procedure. It can bring a good amount of relief to you. It is, therefore, important to know about root canal.

Root canal procedure is so named because the procedure involves cleaning the inside of the tooth. The nerve of the tooth is located within the root canal.

Whether you need to undergo root canal procedure, you can go to a professional dentist, and they would suggest after complete examination. Be aware that root canal procedure involves the following.

If you suffer from any of the following, you need tooth canal procedure

  • Severe tooth ache when you chew food,
  • High sensitivity to hot or cold eatables,
  • The tooth looks bad because of discoloration
  • Swelling in gums in the proximity of the affected tooth
  • Pimple that do not cure on gums

First the dentist will clinically examine and if they feel there is something going amiss, they'll advise to undergo X-ray photography. The dentist takes an x-ray photograph of to view where the actual damage occurs.

Ensure oral hygiene: Brush and floss teeth twice a day.

See your dentist at regular intervals as advised.

Don't chew food too hard – e.g. ice may lead to damage to tooth, which can negatively affect the root canal.
