About 44 lakh Indians are unaware of the fact that they are diabetic. Almost every organ in the body can be adversely affected with the onset of diabetes. Diabetes affects nerve function and blood flow to any organ in the body. One out of three diabetic patients have sexual health related issues.

Sex problems in men

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common sexual dysfunction associated with diabetes. ED is defined as persistent inability to attain/maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. It was previously known as "impotency". Ifaperson suffers from both diabetes and ED, physical examination is needed.

Studies have shown that men with ED and diabetes are more likely to develop cardiac disease. The risk factors for ED are same as that of heart diseases. Some men feel that bringing up this problem is a sign of their "unmanliness".So, if you fail to maintain erections frequently, get it checked as you may not like to be on an ICU bed too early in life.

Other sex problems can include lowlibido (lowinterest to perform sex or sexual activities) and

premature ejaculation.

Sex problems in women

Among diabetic women sexual dysfunctions are more complex. There are different factors involved in the sexual well-being of diabetic women.

  • Low libido (lack of sexual drive), avoidance of sexual contact (sexual aversion disorder), unable to maintain sufficient lubrication, unable to attain orgasm after sexual stimulation
  • Excessive tiredness, the effects of abnormally high or low blood glucose levels
  • Vaginal infections, inflammation caused by diabetes which can cause distress and difficulties while having sex

Management and treatment

Sexual health is important for a physical and psychological well-being. Treatments are available. Lifestyle changes and management of diabetes can help.

  • Avoid smoking
  • Make sure that blood pressure and cholesterol are managed effectively
  • Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly
