When families move from one place to another, especially those having small children want to have all kinds of information before relocating; neighbourhood, proximity to schools, doctors, crèche etc. We were no exception when we moved to Richmond bags and baggage, with kids and pets, most important for us was to find a good kids dentist in Richmond first thing. After all the running around we found one, a good fortunately, in whose hands our kids have been orally healthy.

It was the first visit to the Pediatric Dentist in Richmond as our 5 year old had been complaining that his teeth hurt for more than a few weeks now. Though it was a tough task, but still needs to make it. Much to our shock and of dentist’s we found there were two cavities between his teeth. One was really big the other small. Eventually we got the cavities treated, however during the treatment the dentist gave us some very useful information that we’ve been waiting like to share with other parents so that they can take care of kids dental health from an early age and steer clear of situations we faced.

We parents often blame cavities to not brushing twice, brushing in hurry, no flossing and so on. These are the reasons for tooth decay but what we did not know was that some kids suffer from a disease called dental caries caused by some germs which spread within families and last a lifetime.

Then another reason for such early tooth decay is too much consumption of sugar directly and indirectly. Let’s get deeper into how sugar is responsible for cavities. When kids eat sugar, bacteria named mutans streptococcus feed on it, and produce acid which adversely affects calcium causing harm to the structure of the teeth. This acid is also responsible for creating plaque which again contains acid that weakens teeth by destroying the enamel. When a particular area in tooth remains calcium-less, for an extended period of time, the surface crumples, leading to cavity.

Parents are also encouraging children to have bottled water. Bolted water lacks fluoride and that is yet another cause of dental decay. Our Richmond Dentist also told us that if our kids were keen on using electric toothbrush instead of a manual one, we should allow them to do as it cleans teeth equally well. She also suggested that it was a good idea for parents to synchronize their brushing time (at least brushing before going to bed) with timing of kids to create a habit of brushing among kids.

If you live in Richmond and are looking for a dentist for your kids (toddlers, preschooler, or older), talk to us.
