Mesmerize the Grandeur of Rajasthan with its Forts and Palaces

Rajasthan, a land full of historical glory and colourful vistas, always remains a mystery, irrespective of the number of visits you made. Every time there is something different to do and see in this western state of India. Turn the pages of history and you will find the enormity of Rajasthan in its massive forts and palaces. So, let’s mesmerize the grandeur of Rajasthan with its numerous historical ramparts that stand proudly as the sole witness of the glory of its bygone eras.

Amer Fort

Situated 11 kms away from Jaipur, Amer or Amber Fort is a hilltop fortress belonging to rulers of Amer. In its first appearance, the red sandstone structure appears quite rocky but once step inside its marble courtyards, the amazing decorative features will enthrall you. Murals, frescoes, paintings, mosaic art, carvings and the fascinating mirror work all together display a fine blend of Hindu architectural elements. Construction of the fort was started by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 but was completed by Sawai Jai Singh. As per layout, Amber Fort is carved into four different sections, each with its own entrance and courtyard. It is quite easy to reach the fort through jeeps and elephant rides.

Mehrangarh Fort

With a name that means “Sun Fort”, Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most largest and majestic forts in India. It was called by Rudyard Kipling, a British writer and poet, as “a creation of angels, fairies and giants”. Situated in Jodhpur, the fort is nestled in the city center atop a hill above 122 meters from the city. Inside its thick and high walls lies a world of eternal beauty. Enter into it after passing from a series of seven massive gates and inside its premises are multiple beautifully crafted and architect palaces, among which Moti Mahal, Sheesha Mahal, Daulat Khana, Phool Mahal and Sileh Khana are prominent. The fort was originally constructed by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459 but the present structure had valuable contributions of other rulers too, especially of Jaswant Singh.

Chittorgarh Fort

It is not wrong to call Chittorgarh Fort the legacy holder of Rajasthan’s historical and architectural heritage. Adoring the southern region of the state, this massive fortress is an epitome of Rajput’s valor, sacrifice and nationalism. Sacked thrice in the history, it is basically a complex of magnificent 19 temples, 4 palaces, 7 gates, 20 active water bodies and two memorial towers. It was ruled earliest by Guhilot and later by Sisodias and Akbar-the great Mughal Emperor respectively. Chittorgarh Fort covers an area of 280 hectares, making it India’s largest fortification in terms of area. Its hilltop placement on a 180 meters high hill offers fantastic views of the surrounding. One has to drive around 112 km from Ajmer to reach the fort that resembles more like a fish in shape.

Jaisalmer Fort

Often dubbed as the “Golden Fort”, Jaisalmer Fort is one of the most breathtaking historical ramparts in India. Its fabulous yellow looks amid the golden sand dunes of Thar Desert gives it the honour of being one among the most striking forts of the world. Situated on Trikuta hill, the citadel was constructed in 1156 AD by Rao Jaisal, a Bhati clan Rajput ruler. Among its attractions, major ones are Royal Palace, Jain temples, its massive gateways, merchant havelis and a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. To cater the hunger pangs of visitors thronging Jaisalmer Fort, there are number of eateries that serve a wide range of local dishes and Italian and French delicacies. All these interesting activities of this fort make it a major attraction of holidays in Rajasthan.
