In addition to being a skilled business leader and educator with more than 25 years of experience, Michael Cappy is also a Master Sommelier who is capable of identifying the characteristics of wine, the regions where bottles are produced and the best food pairings for wine. Those who are interested in properly exploring red wine often find that they make mistakes when drinking that prevent them from gaining the full experience. These pointers will help anybody who wants to be able to drink red wine properly.

Pick The Right Glass

Before pouring your wine, it is important that you have the right glass. Red and white wine glasses differ quite considerably, plus there are a number of variations of red wine glasses that work well with specific types of wine. On a general level, red wine glasses will be shorter and wider than white wine glasses, with a more bowl like shape that allows for oxidation.

Don’t Fill The Glass

By filling the glass to the top you give the wine less room to breathe, which can limit the oxidation process. Instead, try not to exceed more than half of the glass.

Swirl The Wine

By swirling the wine in the glass you encourage the chemical reactions brought about by oxidation, releasing the various flavors and aromas of the wine before you consume it. Hold the glass by the stem so that you can swirl more effectively, in addition to ensuring that the temperature of the wine doesn’t change as a result of you holding the glass by the bowl.

Take It In

The act of examining the wine and smelling its aroma is important if you are to get the most out of it. Hold the glass up to a little bit of light so that you can examine the composition of the drink, before introducing it to the nose so that you can start picking out some of the aromas that make up the wine. There is no real set way to do this, with some preferring to place their nose directly into the glass, while others prefer to hover the glass underneath their nostrils.

Drinking

Of course, Michael Cappy recognizes that the act of drinking the wine is what most people are waiting for. However, it is important that you don’t rush this if you want to get the most out of it. Instead, take small sips and try to pair the wine with appropriate food, so that you can enjoy complementing flavors.
