You’re excited, in fact you’re ecstatic, it’s your first proper holiday, without your parents just you and maybe your partner or some friends. I was the exact same, when I was 19 me and some friends went to Rome for a week, none of us had ever been away without our parents, and the problem was our parents were the ones who handled things. So some mistakes were made on that trip, that looking back could have easily avoided. So with the help of Humberside Airport Parking, we here at Care Free Parking have compiled a list of 3 common mistakes made by novice travellers.

Leave some space in the schedule

This is a common one, novice travellers will insist on having every minute of their holiday pre-booked, planned down to the second, leaving no time for anything not on the itinerary. But when you get to the destination you will then see things you want to do, but can’t because you’re already booked. This exact thing happened to me in Rome, for want of a better phrasing me and my friend’s edge on the gothic side, so when we heard about the crypt of St. Mary of Eulogies and the Dead, we all wanted to go, but we’d already planned everything, and had payed for things so we couldn’t go. Plan things by all means, but leave time free, that way you won’t come back with regrets.

Be aware

Right, to contextualise this next point, picture those people who perform on the high street, a few years ago I was pick pocketed by some associates to the street performer, ever since I’ve refused to stop and watch any of them. This thing happens abroad to, there are people out there who spend years learning how to tell novice travellers from experienced ones, and they pray on it. I can’t tell you everything to look out for, because like all con artists they develop their own personalised routine, but be aware and try and limit the amount of valuables you have on you, and never carry all the money you have.

People are just People

British tourists get a bad rep abroad, especially novice travellers who unfortunately are told by the media that foreigners can’t be trusted, meaning that no matter where you go you end up being paranoid of everyone who catches your eye line. You begin to look paranoid, rude and disrespectful. You are a visitor in these peoples country, and by clinging to your money pouch every time someone gets within a metre of you, you are being offensive. Same as when you’re a teenager and you see an old lady clutch her bag when you walk past, it’s not a nice experience knowing someone thinks you’re a criminal so stop acting like everyone is, and realise these people in their city, in their country are getting on with their normal day.

There you have it Humberside Airport Parking and Care Free Parking’s 3 tips on how to avoid making common mistakes that will leave you feeling disappointed and, how to stop yourself becoming a victim of con artists and how to stop people thinking the British are rude (even though it’s just propaganda driven hyper vigilance). Honestly travelling is fun and you’ll have a blast no matter what happens, but just remember it’s your first time proceed cautiously and stay aware, you will be disorientated and probably a bit culture shocked, but take it as it comes, whether it turns out great or bad, you’ll always have the story to tell.
