There are various forms of Project Management. Organizations prefer one form over another. Here is a brief overview on the difference between Six Sigma and Project Management professional.

If looked at the titles, both are of repute. Six Sigma certification clearly indicates certificate holder’s expertise with its colored belt levels. For example as the names specify, a black belt holder certainly signifies to have more knowledge and expertise than a green belt holder. Project Management Professional aka PMP titles are many times used in place of Project Management Guru.

Broader PerspectiveWhile the Black Belt professionals cater to overall leadership and performance going beyond the purview of the project, the Project Management professional tends to software solutions, industry specialization, structure and a detail oriented approach towards the projects.

In both the cases, for the lifecycle management of a project, the programs use process groups. The five process groups used by Project management institutes are: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Closing while Six Sigma uses Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control aka DMAIC.

Obtaining CertificationGetting the certificate also makes two programs different from each other. PMP certification is generally an employee’s choice while in case of Six Sigma, the company determines whether or not an employee is a suitable candidate for the aforesaid program.

Needless to say, that the eligibility and training of these two programs also differ a lot. PMP candidates need to apply for taking the exam, meet minimum years of project management experience as a criterion, and a minimum educational requirement. In addition to these, one has to participate in 35 hours of training, pass certification exam, and maintain certification through continuing education along with maintaining a code of conduct throughout. For Earning a black belt in Six Sigma one has to complete 4-6 weeks of training with additional software training, passing exam, being approved by sponsors, complete a couple of projects according the instructions specified, coaching green belts, delivering training and none the less meet full time work requirement.

The Project Management Professional certification program is oriented towards the individual development and need while Six Sigma Certification is designed keeping in mind the development of group infrastructure as a whole.Cost Involvement

The cost of these two programs also varies greatly. The PMP certification can be done in a budget within $1,500-$3000. The Six Sigma courses are costing $25,000-$50,000. Mostly organizations invest heavily in Black Belt certifications. Black belt candidates are very much supported by mentors, sponsors, Master Black belts and their bosses.

Organizations which are interested in making their Project managers earn PMP certification may follow the following points of Black Belt programs:• Actively selecting PMP candidates• Sponsoring and supporting these candidates by assigning a coach or mentor• Invest time, resources, and money• Measure results• Create a visible certification structure• Communicate progress and success• Celebrate success• Foster continuous certification activities• Keep up with industry news, research, trends, and best practices• Collaborate internally and externally

It can be concluded that the success of program relies only on its candidates – The Company Executives.
