No wonder, that oil companies have already consumed all the available resources of oil reserves, particularly, those that have been comparatively easy to access in the past. While the good thing is, with modern technology in place, oil can now be extracted even from the distant areas and other parts where there was no clue of having oil reserves.

Oil and gas engineering has been taking a new route in the twenty-first century, which meant, that engineers need to be proficient in skills like thermo-hydraulics, geomechanics and other intelligent systems that are a need of modern day drilling techniques.

There are nearly seventeen universities in the United States alone that offer specialized courses in oil and gas engineering. You may also enroll in engineering courses offered by oil companies themselves. The good thing about this industry, however, is the pay structure which is better than many other industries. While a graduate may expect to start low, as the time passes, growth prospectus is huge. To satisfy the ever increasing demand of oil and gas engineers, several oil and gas engineering courses are being offered by universities that are specialized in this domain.

There are different types of engineers whose expertise is essential to the oil company such as:

  1. Reservoir engineers
  2. Drilling engineers
  3. Production engineers

A reservoir engineer is the person who make a decision about where and how the oil rig will be installed to optimize the amount of oil produced. While the technical side of the operation is handled by the drilling engineer, including it's production, injection and exploratory. Finally a production engineer controls everything related to the production of the oil. Each one of these has a specific role to play for the entire operation to run flawlessly.

Oil companies rely on these engineers to complete all the operations related to finding, extracting and producing oil within an optimum time frame. If an engineer gets it wrong, it may cost the company millions of dollars. This is one of the reasons, these engineers are well paid by the companies for maintaining the accuracy in their work.

Making a career in oil and gas engineering is worth considering not only for the financial rewards associated with it, but also, for its other various aspects that are appealing to the engineers. The only thing that is difficult, however, is a major responsibility that they have on their shoulders.
