In case of data loss, the only thing user can go for is their system’s backup that consists entire data of user. NTBackup is one such application that provides backup of NT series operating system data. However, this utility is missing from newer versions of Windows Operating systems. To create backup in Windows 7/8, 8.1/10 there is options like image backup and file history Therefore, the latest version like Windows 10 does not supports NTBackup BKF files, as these OS are not integrated with NTBackup.exe. There is no direct way to restore backup from older NT versions to new versions.

There are some work around that can restore or extract data from BKF file to newer versions of Windows OS.

Technique To Extract Windows Backup File

Extracting BKF File data using XP’s NTbackup Tool with NT5backup.cab

NtBackup setup can execute well on any other windows version like Windows 7,8, 10 with.dll and.exe files. If vssapi.dll, ntmsapi.dll and nt5backup.cab files are available in same folder that storing NtBackup executable file, then one can run NTbackup file without any hassle.

User can get these files from old Windows systems, by following C:\Windows\System32 path, Microsoft also offers plug- in these sporting files. One can also download cab file from internet and must keep these file at same folder.

Procedure Needs To Be Follow For Extracting.BKF File Using NTbackup

Note: After saving all files along with ntbackup.exe in the same folder, when user will opens ntbackup.exe, it will show following message because Windows 7, 8 does not have RSM (Removable Storage Manager) in it. RSM is required for tape backups only.

Firstly, downloadnt5backup.cab cabinet file

  • Add the files inside the cabinet file to a folder that have ntbackup.exe

  • User needs to run ntbackup.exe as Administrator, for this, right click on ntbackup.exe and choose Run as Administrator.

  • NTBackup will show that Removable Storage service is not exist in the system. However, it is only required for tape backups.

  • Click OK.

  • A Welcome to Backup or Restore Wizard will appear on the screen, and click Next

  • Now user needs to select Restore files and settings, and click Next

  • After this,click on Browse button and browse backup (.bkf) file that user wants to extract, it will pop-up Open backup File window

  • Click OK.

  • Now user can select the files or folders that they wants to restore, by exploring the list of catalog given on left side.

  • Click Next

After clicking Next, user can click Finish to extract the file.

Note: To specify alternate location and for additional restore options, user can click on Advanced.

In earlier version of Windows7, user have enable Removable Storage Manager service to install NTBackup for extracting it’s BKF file in the system. But now by downloading Cabinet files, user can restore BKF backup files in the system.

Shortcomings of above mentioned method:

  • If the backup is saved on tape or external device then this method will not work.

  • If the backup file are in corrupt state, user can extract or restore it’s data in the system. As this method will be not able to perform restoration on corrupt BKF files.

  • Non technical users may find this method difficult as the whole process need deep knowledge of NTBackup utility.

Alternative Solution:

With many shortcomings of manual method, user can also go for commercial tools that can perform the whole task without consuming too much time and without having any prerequisites.
