As a CAD user, you get an opportunity to see and use a variety of different file management tools. But as a user, here are the top 5 things that you would love about SOLIDWORKS PDM.

Number 1: Copy Tree

Copy Tree permits you to create a duplicate group of files at are reproductions of the originals while keeping the file references. Moreover, it is FAST! Not like Pack and Go when drawings are included, Copy Tree doesn’t require to go through all of your referenced paths looking for each drawing to figure out who are the parents and if it is a sketch that is needed or not.

Number 2: PDM Templates

PDM Templates provides the ability to create folder and data arrangements from a template. The template collects data you give it and then transfer this information through the complete project folder arrangement. Metadata for the data cards can also be carried into the files. This automates the method of starting a new project based off of an older project and you won’t be stuck doing "busy work".

Number 3: Work Local

Any user who came across a corrupted file knows the issue with working over a network. The files you open and edit are on the server and if there is a network glitch while you are saving there is a good chance your file will get corrupted. There can also be lengthy "save times" when files are not local. From the user prospective, it means you avoid saving which has obvious issues. But when you checkout a file in SOLIDWORKS PDM it will relocate a copy of the file to your local cache.

Number 4: History Of A File

As a user it many times becomes necessary to work with different versions of SOLIDWORKS files. Maybe you need to know what changes were made in the last version. Or maybe a customer requires a replacement part for something they purchased years ago and the new version will not fit. SOLIDWORKS PDM’s capability to show the history of a file that becomes irreplaceable. At any time you can view, get, save, rollback, compare or print a previous version of your files.

Number 5: The Add-in

Working with SOLIDWORKS PDM in Windows Explorer is awesome. One thing that makes SOLIDWORKS PDM even better is the add-in inside of SOLIDWORKS. This gives you access to the PDM task pane such that you have many of the PDM tools without minimizing the SOLIDWORKS window.
