But, doing this means you miss out on experiencing the real Malaysia, its culture much more prominent in its unexplored places. Enter from Singapore: Cross the border easily by boarding a bus from Singapore and getting off at Johor Bahru. There are several express buses that ply this route and you can buy tickets online from redbus as well.

Johor Bahru to Melaka: Without spending much time at Johor Bahru, head to Melaka to spend a day there. Explore the historic city on its extremely colourful yellow-blue trishaws. The street performances on Jonker Street will be memories that will stay with you forever.

Melaka to Kuala Lumpur: Hit the capital next. Set shop for a day in Chinatown that will get you cheap accommodation and food. A trip to the Reggae bar here is a must.

Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu to Perhentian Island: From KL, board a bus to Kota Bharu, where you can stay for another day exploring the city before heading off to Perhentian Island to cap off the journey

Weather and Packing :

If you are from the European region or from South East Asia, the weather can be a bit humid, so drinking a lot of water is suggested. Do pack sweat wicking apparel as they are your best bet. Bring minimal toiletries as it is easily available from local shops and also supermarkets.

Airport and Local Transport :

Make sure always purchase a prepaid voucher from taxi stand in airport and avoid touts at all costs. Buses are the most economical and fastest modes of transport to choose when travelling within and to and from different cities. You can even take tickets online from Redbus.

Communication and Connection :

English is widely spoken and food labels, sign on hawkers store, restaurant menus, etc. are all available in English. At the airport, Malaysia cellular providers - Maxis, Digi, Celcom, have set up shop. The network coverage is very good including in some of the remote areas of Malaysia.
