Commercial sale of any products has two major deciding factors to ensure people favour it. While the price and the quality are manufacturing concerns, proper packaging of a product goes a long way in making it a consumer favourite.

What is good packaging?

Good packaging has the following qualities

  • It suits the product which it holds – based on what size and substance the product is made out of.
  • It is designed without much waste of material – excess and unnecessary packages that don’t serve any purpose should be avoided as to not waste material
  • Designed to hold the particular product for extended periods – products might need to be shipped and transported over long distances and packaging might be needed for extended periods of time to get the product to the end consumer
  • Made of good quality material that does not spoil - based on the nature of the product inside, the material holding it should be of good quality suited to the product.
  • Is approved by common industry standards – packaging should be approved by an industrial standards organisation for both design and quality.

Cosmetic products packaging

A full set of cosmetic products used in everyday makeup range from powders to creams to lotions, and need to be sold in attractive, properly named packages. There are various types of cosmetic packaging.

Unit dose packaging

Unit dose packaging is used for packing products in a single dose, for very small quantities. Unit dose packaging must have custom labelling, pad printing, hot stamping and embossing of logo or image of the company producing the product.

This packaging is used for travel kits and small size products. It can have a strip of single unit dosages that have resealable options so they can be used multiple times if needed. It has higher hygiene vs the traditional containers holding these products.

Dual chamber bottles

When the product is not of a single type, and has to work has a combination of a solid and liquid (say powder and lotion), it is given in Dual chamber bottles. Both the liquid and solid products can be placed in the same container that has a tamper proof cap.

A ten mL bottle and a 1.5mL reservoir can store two different products, and applying pressure would help the user mix the two contents just right before usage. This is a highly beneficial solution to store two products that have to be used together but is cumbersome to carry separately.

Dual chamber bottle

These containers carry liquids and a small hole can be pierced in the membrane to allow for drop by drop displacement of the liquid inside. These containers have a protection for the cannula and can hold liquids in varying quantities based on the requirement.

Turnkey packaging in the cosmetic industry for product sampling and unit packaging have completely changed the manufacturing industry and have made the products themselves more alluring to the consumer. Packaging is no longer about simply holding the product, it has evolved into something that needs to be attractive, useful and amazingly compact.
