How to Save 520 Million Miles per Year

Transdek UK have claimed that they have a solution which could save up to a staggering 520 million road miles each year. This, understandably, has caught the attention of the entire haulage industry and they are unveiling this solution at the Freight in the City Expo at Alexandra Palace, London on November 2nd.

DUET Urban Double-Deck Trailers

They will be exhibiting two of their incredible DUET urban double-deck trailers – these trailers will enable operators and managers to transport loads that are twice as large. Transdek UK are confident that these double-decker trailers will transform urban distribution and reduce the volume of HGVs in highly congested cities around the UK.

With such large claims, all eyes will be on Transdek UK at Alexandra Palace and all the big names in the haulage industry will be in attendance to see the impressive trailers for themselves, as well as hear what they have to say about double-deck loading and why it is the future for logistics.

Mark Adams, who is their managing director, explains how they came to such an impressive figure.

"Based on DfT statistics, we’ve calculated that if just 10% of the UK’s 18-tonne rigids were changed for urban double-deckers, this would save 104 million road miles a year, mainly in urban centres. Converting half of the trucks would see a reduction of 520 million miles."

Other Impressive Features

It is not just providing the ability to transport twice as much with every delivery that they have been working on, however. They have also been working alongside the Noise Abatement Society (NAS) to reduce operational noise for overnight distribution. Together, they incorporated sound-deadening coatings on all surfaces in one of the trailers and quiet tail-lift; these have been designed for city deliveries at night where operational noise is often an issue.

The same trailer uses a PIEK-certified fridge unit, which enables it to be a multi-temperature trailer that can transport a combination of chilled and frozen groceries.

Both the multi-temperature trailer with quiet technology and standard configuration DUET urban double-deck trailer also utilise their patented twin slide doors, which have been improved with noise reduction features to improve both safety and load security at night.

The Big Picture

These two trailers on show at Alexandra Palace are just a small part of their plan; as Adams went on to explain that logistics operators could double their load on most conventional fleets.

"By using a range of double-deck trailer types and sizes, logistics operators could achieve 100% extra load on most of their conventional HGV fleets that are used for retail deliveries. Transdek’s urban Wedge double-deck trailer, for example, carries exactly twice as much as standard urban artic of the same length."

These revolutionary trailers could transform the haulage industry by providing extremely high volume deliveries to city centres, all whilst reducing noise pollution, air pollution, transport costs and congestion. With the rise of these double-load trailers, the need for effective haulage exchanges such as the one I’m part of rises as well, as truck drivers will want to make sure to optimally make use of their increased capacity.
