Technology has made it much easier to learn a new language. From online classes to chatting with people from around the world, it brings the world to you. You’ll also find numerous apps to help you with learning a language. If your goal is just to learn a few key phrases for a trip, an app may be all you need. It can also supplement language courses in Vancouver or elsewhere as you work to develop fluency.

Google Translate

This app is ideal for the traveler who just needs to know the most important words and phrases or the person who forgot a word and needs a quick answer. It includes 103 languages, and you can quickly copy text into the app to translate, which is useful when you’re reading something in another language. You can even use the camera to take photos of signs. It even has conversation mode for instant translation.

ATI Studios

Choose from numerous languages in the series with apps like Learn French. Speak French. Or Learn German. Speak German. It helps you learn phrases and sentences and even converse with others. It’s designed for either a beginner or advanced student, and it’s ideal as a companion to private or group lessons from a language learning program.

Phrasebook – Learn Languages

Be able to quickly speak phrases when you need to in a variety of situations. You can use it when you travel or if you are in an emergency situation. This app includes English, French, Spanish, German, Russian and many others. A parrot helps you practice speaking and listening no matter where you are. Use it in conjunction with language courses so you can expand your skills and learn a new language faster.

Translate voice – Translator

The major benefit of this app is that it translates your speech, so you can use it when you’re talking to someone in another language and you won’t have to type in the words. It also translates the written word from more than 80 languages. This app corrects spelling and even suggests the correct word to use. You can share texts into IM or social networks directly from the app.

Conversation Translator

This app translates a conversation while you’re speaking, making it easy to communicate with people in other languages. It lists the comments in a conversation format, which is helpful for tracking what has been said. You can ask questions and have the answer interpreted for you.

All of these apps are free, which means you may have popup ads. But they offer valuable assistance if you are traveling in a foreign country and don’t know the language. They can also be helpful if you have taken language courses in Vancouver or your hometown, but need a refresher on some of the words and phrases.

Just know that none of these apps replace language classes that provide in-depth information to help you learn to speak fluently. They will get you through a situation where you need to communicate but to really converse, you need to take a full language course.
