Security guards are often the first line of contact between the business they are guarding and representing, and the public. The public will likely associate the guard as being an employee of the business, and the impression taken from the first contact is reflective upon that business. It is therefore necessary to hire and train guards who know how to handle contacts and associate with general public. A guard should possess the following attributes, whether guarding a wedding reception, a concert, or a large public event.

1. Maintain Appearance

Whether driving a company marked security vehicle or wearing a designated uniform, a guard must be aware that he is literally a visible billboard for all to see. The guard should understand that appearance is key to the public's impression of the guard himself, the employer he represents, and the client who has hired him. Additionally, the guard's appearance is representative of the security industry as a whole. A guard must present himself professionally by being hygienic with a clean, crisp, and ironed uniform. His patrol vehicle should be clean and properly maintained for safety to himself and the public.

2. Interpret Public's Needs

The key to successful public relations centers around communication. A guard must know how to react and respond. A guard comes in contact with all types of personalities, motivated by various emotions. People approach the guard with all types of questions. They may need help finding a lost item, need directions, or help learning where to park. Other times they may need medical assistance, physical help, or may need to report an incident. Properly interpreting the public's needs is critical in resolving their issues. Before a guard can assist, he must understand what is being asked of him.

A guard should reserve judgment when handling the public's request. Every contact should be handled with professionalism. The old adage of treating people as you would prefer to be treated certainly applies.

3. Use Passion and Empathy

It is often said that people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care! A guard with the enthusiasm and passion for his job will always leave a positive impression on the public he assists. A guard never knows, when dealing with the public, what he will face next. It is imperative for the guard to place himself in the shoes of the other person, and show empathy to the person's situation. It is best not to judge, but to try to gain an understanding of why a person is acting like he does. Try to see a situation from the other person's point of view.
