Are you planning to enroll your kid in a good school? Today, parents have several educational boards to choose from. Besides SSC (Secondary School Certificate) and ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education), they can even enroll their kids in IB (International Baccalaureate) or IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) schools.

Why choose an IGCSE school in India?

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a qualification that is recognized globally. It is taken at the class 10 level and is similar to the class 10 exams in ICSE or CBSE board schools. Formed in 1988, IGCSE is a comprehensive two-year programme that is spread over class 9 and 10. It leads to the final exams that are offered every year in the month of May and November.

There are mainly two UK assessment bodies that conduct IGCSE assessment- CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) and Edexcel (also known as London Examinations). If your child passes the IGCSE examination, he/she will be eligible for any +2 level qualification such as, Class 12 CBSE/ICSE or any other international pre-university programme such as the Advanced placement Diploma (US) and A/AS Level & AICE (UK) and IB Diploma.

Compared to all other modern programmes, IGCSE offers a wider range of subjects for students. It encourages high academic standards and the teaching and learning approach is quite practical. Assessment in case of IGCSE is not limited to the conventional written papers and it consists of various tests such as, oral and listening tests.

The IGCSE curriculum is very balanced and offers a flexible course of study. In most subjects, there is a choice between extended curriculum and core curriculum. Due to this, students get the freedom to choose subjects that are right for them. This gives them the opportunity to score good grades.

Currently, this programme starts at the Class 9 level and a student who has done his/her early schooling from any other board can easily join the IGCSESchool at Class 9 level. Here are the subjects students need to learn in this programme:

There are mainly five subject groups in this programme and each group has different subjects to choose from. The first group has languages (first and second language and foreign language), second group has humanities and social sciences (Geography, history, English literature etc.), third group will include sciences (Chemistry, physics and biology), fourth group will have mathematics and fifth group will include creative, technical and vocational subjects (Accounting, computer studies, music and business studies).

The certificate for each subject merely indicates the grades that are scored by the students and not whether they have passed or failed.

Reasons to Choose IGCSE programme

  • It is one of the most recognized qualifications in the world.
  • It has worldwide credibility and status.
  • It is balanced and lends an international perspective to studies.

Whether you are choosing an IGCSE school or any international boarding school in Mumbai, make sure that you are doing some research.
