It wasn’t as fun as watching No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 all go down on the same night, but January 28’s slew of upsets once again shook up ncaa college basketball

  • s top 25, its conference races, and the potential bracket lineups as March draws near.

Georgia Tech 62, #14 Notre Dame 60: You know it and I know it that Notre Dame is always overrated in every sport. The national media can’t help itself, never can. Still ranked No. 14, the Fighting Irish rallied from five points down to tie the game at 60 with 2:46 to play then never scored again. Georgia Tech got a driving layup from Josh Okogie with one second left to take the win. What it means: The Irish are in freefall, losing two in a row and three of their last four and missed a chance to move into a tie for first. Georgia Tech is suddenly two games out of the conference lead and has three wins over ranked opponents this season.

Syracuse 82, #6 Florida State 72: This wasn’t so much of an upset as a butt-whipping. The Orangemen led by 18 at halftime in one of the most bizarre sequences of the year. The score was 19-16 Syracuse with 6:02 to play, but the Orange scored 25 points over the next six minutes, led by Tyler Roberson’s eight. The Seminoles crept within three points with 12:29 to play in the game but never regained the lead. What it means: Florida State blew a shot at a share of the ACC lead while Syracuse got above.500 in conference play.

Miami 77, #9 North Carolina 62: Like the Seminoles, the Tar Heels didn’t get upset, they got flattened. Miami led by 17 at halftime and got 30 points from Bruce Brown who hit 8-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-6 from the three-point line. What it means: North Carolina will be kicking itself all the way down Tobacco Road after this one. They could take a two-game lead in the ACC with a win here, with Notre Dame and Florida state getting upset the same night. #2 Kansas 79, #4 Kentucky 73: Not an upset based on their rankings, but a big one considering Kentucky’s prowess at home. The Wildcats botched plenty of things themselves by missing 9 of 22 free throws while Frank Mason III upped his ante for Player of the Year honors by scoring 21 points, grabbing three rebounds, dishing out four assists, and swiping two steals. What it means: That Kansas can bounce back from an ugly loss, in a hostile environment, against some really dynamic opponents - a surefire sign of a national title contender. The Wildcats lost back-to-back games for the first time in 360 days; how will they bounce back from here? Georgetown 85, #11 Butler 81: I realize a lot of this is because I grew up in the 1980s and am officially old, but it’s still weird thinking of Georgetown as the unranked underdog against anyone. Regardless, the Hoyas scrapped out a big win in an otherwise lackluster year (12-10, 3-6) by getting a great effort from the 1-2 punch of Rodney Pryor and LJ Peak. the pair combined for 42 points on 14-of-23 shooting, and each hit a trio of three-pointers. Peak’s free throw with nine seconds to play put the game on ice. What it means: Butler falls a half-game behind Villanova in the Big East standings despite beating the Wildcats earlier this year. Butler is at Villanova in the rematch on February 22.
