People suffering from hair loss now have several options such as follicular unit extraction, follicular unit transplantation and Micrografting that can help in hair restoration. Hair transplant is performed by taking a strip of the skin or by taking a few follicular units from the back of the head and transplanting it in the bald areas.

Men suffering from male pattern baldness, have a few hairs left around the head in a U-pattern or an M-pattern from where the hair is harvested. The area from where the hairs would be takenis referred to as the donor site.

Understanding Where Your Donor Site Is

The words, male pattern baldness, and female pattern baldness have the word pattern included in them. It is because there is a pattern of the baldness. Men, especially start to lose hair, mostly in their crown, front, and top areas. The head retains hair of the back and the sides. It is because the back and the sides of the head are less likely to be affected by the action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the hair follicles. These are the donor hair sites from where the surgeon will take hairs to implant in the bald areas.

Different Types of Hairs Give Different Results

These hairs that have been extracted from the donor site are then transplanted into the bald parts by making tiny slits into the scalp. The skin and the hair of the donor area are called grafts. Each graft can consist of one hair or a few hairs. Coarser hairs require only a few hairs per graft as they are bulkier and hence provide more coverage. Fine hairs, on the other hand, provide less coverage but give a more natural look. Curly or wavy hairs covers more scalp area as the hair curls on itself, providing great visual results. They also tend to hold their shape in a better way and appear that it is covering a greater area.

Other Considerations

The surgeon must at all times remember your current hair loss pattern and the rate at which hair might be lost in the future. The new hairline that the surgeon will create during the hair restoration treatment process is crucial. The front hairline varies from person to person in shape. The doctor will choose a design that would be more natural and fuller. The top and the front part of the head receive the transplanted hair before the other areas as they create the frame of your face. It makes a huge impact on the overall appearance of the person. Unless the crown is your only balding area, it remains the last area to receive the hairs for restoration.

When you go to the doctor for a consultation, the doctor will examine your head. The doctor will use a densitometer to measure the density of the hairs and evaluate the hair loss pattern. The doctor should explain the entire hair restoration treatment process and all the risks that are involved in it. One should do a thorough research before going ahead with the process.
