Every woman had put a makeup at some day, but no one has ever thought that why after putting a makeup, the face glitters and has flawless looking skin. It is because the mica powder is added to the makeup material which forms the glittering appearance after using it. Colorful micas are formed by ultramarines, highly heat resistant iron oxides, or dyes covering the muscovite mica flakes. Due to its easy formation process, people can easily mix their home-made mica powders to their makeup base. This is completely natural, hypoallergenic, and cost-effective substitute to have a natural looking makeup kit. Mica pigment powder consists a non-toxic color base that glitters when mixed with the eyeshadow, foundation, blush, and bath products. From a professional to casual hobbyist, anyone can create a sparkling palette of mica powders by simply adding the correct ingredients to it.

What do you need to prepare mica powder?

  • Mortar and pestle
  • Measuring spoons
  • 3 tsp. magnesium stearate
  • 6 tbsp. titanium dioxide
  • 4 tsp. selected iron oxide pigments
  • 1 tsp. bismuth oxychloride
  • 5 tsp. sericite mica
  • Jojoba oil
  • Plastic jar with lid

Add magnesium stearate, bismuth oxychloride, and titanium dioxide to the mortar. Balance the mortar and then grind the powder in the pestle. The formed mixture is a base for the mica powder. Choose the color that you want for the powder. Then measure the iron oxides pigments, blend the sericite mica with the iron oxide pigments and then mix it to the mica powder pigment to form the color. If required, add some more pigment to the mixture until you don’t get the desired color of mica powder.

After adding iron oxide and sericite mica, add 1 to 2 drops of jojoba oil in the formed powder and then blend the mixture nicely. The added jojoba oil will work as a binding agent that maintains the evenness of the mica powder. After this, pour the mica powder into the plastic jar container and close the lid tightly so that the powder can be prevented from coming in contact with the air and oxygen. Once the jar is closed, label the date on it and don’t use the mica pigment powder after six months of the expiry date.

Today, every makeup product available in the market contains the mica powder. The pigments of mica powder give the pure pigment color to the makeup product. In fact, it is hard to recognize any natural makeup products or a line of makeup products without containing the mica pigments. The product that doesn’t contain mica in it uses the dyes to give the desired color to the material which is not safe for the skin. Many people can have sensitivity with such harmful colored dyes.
