Mad About Madécasse

One of the benefits of working in wholesale chocolates is that I can follow trends as they develop. The desire to supply modern consumers with ethically produced, responsibly sourced products is a phenomenon which has taken off in the past few decades. Chocolatiers are more motivated than ever to provide quality goods and with an ethical production process.

Divine have lead the way, highlighting the need for fairer trade in the confectionery world, and shining a light on the living and working conditions of third-world cacao farmers. Another trailblazer is Madécasse, commendable not only for their flavourful chocolate, but also for their commitment to the places and people they work with.

Their Story

The journey began in Madagascar where the founders of Madécasse were volunteers with the Peace Core. Here they came across heirloom cacao. This special variety was grown before mass industrialisation; Madécasse describe it as ‘Earth’s original chocolate’. Madécasse always dreamed of having a real, lasting impact on the country they fell in love with and in 2008 this dream became a reality. They produced their first bar made in Africa.

Their mission was to buck the trend and create a company that makes chocolate where it grows. This was decided after they discovered that less than 1% of the sweet treat that is eaten globally is made in Africa and an astounding 70% of the world’s cocoa stock is grown there.

Madécasse work with a ‘direct trade’ model (as opposed to a ‘fair trade’ model) to support economic growth in Madagascar. They work directly with the farmers to reduce the distance between the grower, the producer, and the consumer.

The company also hosts annual volunteer trips to the island and contribute to life there by building water systems and bridges and refurbishing and expanding local schools. Now we are fortunate enough to be selling their chocolate wholesale!

Their Showstoppers

When it comes to flavour, Madécasse do not pull any punches – they are known enemies of bland products. In 2013 their Cinnamon and Chilli Pepper 63% dark bar won a Great Taste Award. The bar combines dark cacao with Ceylon cinnamon and sakay chilli pepper for an exotic taste with a spicy finish. A personal favourite of mine is the Toasted Coconut 44% milk bar. This delicious delicacy has a tropical feel due to the fruity 70% bar and I love the added crunch of the toasted real coconut flakes.

For an after dinner delight that means business, look no further than Madécasse’s 100% dark bar made from heirloom Madagascar cacao. As a seller of wholesale chocolates, it is not often that I come across a 100% dark bar. This is something special, like rediscovering your favourite food for the first time.

With its intense flavours and ethical mindset, Madécasse can satisfy our taste buds and our morals every time. If you are excited by this brand and want to know more about our range of wholesale chocolates, get in touch with our sales team.
