In his Minute on Indian Education, the English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay argued for the introduction of English as the medium of instruction in middle and secondary schools in India. The argument, leading to the implementation of the English Education Act of 1835, was primarily to modernize the literature and education in inferior India according to Macaulay’s view of the nation and its culture. India has moved forward by leaps and bounds since, wherein 2017, we are contesting educational reforms, and the promotion of smart classrooms as a medium for teaching and learning.

The smart classrooms operate on the fundamental principle of learning – human brains process visual information faster and retain such learning for a longer time. Studies point to the fact that as compared to information written down in the text format, children can remember their concepts when visual images are presented to them. Technology today, enables us to provide our children with modules including presentations and videos, which are interactive in nature. The best schools in Delhi have been gradually adopting the smart classroom modules, which have helped students to learn faster and better.

Students, especially when they are young can focus on the audio-visuals and relate with them, sometimes even more than the traditional teaching methods. A teacher today typically has to work with sixty students in a classroom, each student with varying needs and requirements. The technology employed through the smart classrooms tends to the auditory and visual perception of the students, projecting images, visuals, and audios that invoke response and instrument the conditioning process. While saving time, the facilitator or teacher can focus her/his time on attending the specific needs of the students.

Another advantage of the smart class curriculum is that it is constantly updated, and in synchronization with the knowledge and information available on the internet. For particularly resource-intensive subjects such as science, history, geography, and mathematics, what better than learning about methods and solutions from all across the world, in a virtual environment? Not only does this expose the students to myriad ways, but it also introduces them to cultures, traditions, practices, and applications used in different parts of the world.

The future as it is predicted today is technology-oriented. And, by default an early introduction to the power, use, and importance of technology in solving the world’s problems is essential. The top 10 schools in Dwarka and in other parts of Delhi are training their students to be the change makers, leaders, and social change agents of tomorrow. And, without technology this training is only half done. In an increasingly integrated society, we are bridging the ever-increasing problems with technologically-able students and global citizens.

Studies also indicate that schools which use smart modules for teaching have consistently shown better academic performance. This can be owed to the availability of the module as it was taught in the class even at a later stage of recall, the stimulating graphics, and the detailed description of the concepts, which otherwise would have been equivalent to pages after pages on a printed medium.

All this said one of the most important way technology influences education is by making it accessible to children of all social statuses, within or outside the institution of school. More social enterprises and organizations have taken it as their cause to help education reach the unattended sections of society through technology. A tablet in the hands of a five-year-old in a basti in Delhi and a student in the best nursery school in Dwarka is likely to leave a similar imprint – by bridging the gap in access and opportunities.

India, an emerging country, with focus on development should invest more in education that is available to all – education that reaches student in the presence or absence of teachers.

Delhi International School in Dwarka Sector 23 aims to provide a holistic development of the students by enhancing their scholastic and co-scholastic development.
