Adventure Bound in Bali

You’ve probably heard of countless people heading off to Bali for a getaway. It’s usually either Bali or Thailand being the most popular Asian destinations for the beaches and party go-ers. There’s actually a whole lot more to Bali than those two elements! With plenty of sights to see and things to do. Bali being an island province of Indonesia is a place well-known for its cultural aspects such as dance, art, metal work, leather and music. The temperature on this island averages 30 degrees celsius all year round and is fairly humid, but it does provide great beach weather. Here’s a list of some of the top things to do while in Bali (if you’re not just there for the beaches, booze and partying):

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

With so many beaches to choose from, some noteworthy places to snorkel in include Nusa Dua, Menjangan Island, Pemuteran and Nusa Lembongan. When scuba diving in Bali, choose reputable operators and complete a PADI diving course. There are tours that bring you to great dive sites such as the Padang Bai, Blue Lagoon and Jepun, where you will see an abundance of fish in their natural habitat.

Bike Riding

  • An eco educational cycling tour will bring you one step closer to nature in Bali, as well as the culture. See the different landscapes as you cycle through the urban, coastal and forest areas of this amazing island. Make stops to traditional Balinese settlements, plantations and villages along the way.

  • Cultural Experiences

  • Visit Jatiluwih Green Land, a World Heritage Site in Tabanan. Essentially, it is just rice fields, but with smooth contours of the crops it spreads about the region and are a sight to see, providing a glimpse into traditional rice fields and irrigation methods. There’s a fair amount of cultural buildings such as the Tirta Gangga, Tanah Lot Temple, Tirta Empul Temple and Uluwatu Temple which display fantastic architectural designs. Maybe you could also hop on a cooking class to find out first-hand how Balinese cuisine is prepared!

  • Wildlife

  • There is no shortage of wildlife here in Bali. If you’d like to get closer to nature there’s always animal centres that make this possible, through their conservation and education efforts to visitors and locals. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Bali Safari & Marine Park, Elephant Safari Park, Bali Bird Park, and the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre are all unique in their own way here in Bali and are perfect for learning about the local wildlife of the area.

  • Hiking

  • If you enjoy walking trails and going straight into the wild, plan a visit to Sekumpul Waterfalls or the Devil’s Tears. Both offer different views, one being serene in a forest atmosphere while the other is a coastal one that is simply refreshing. There’s a set hike catering to all ages, known as the Campuhan Ridge Walk in Ubud which I’d also recommended. For ‘real’ hiking, you would probably want to head to Mount Agung or Mount Kawi. Mount Kawi has alot of stairs, but the scenery and carvings in the side of the hill make the struggle worth it!

There can be a good balance between relaxing on the beach/partying and having a great adventure in Bali. With lots of cheap Bali deals going around, it is a good idea to get comfortable and affordable accommodation where you can come back to at the end of the day after going on your daily adventures.
