Brimming with history, culture, and indisputable character, Zadar is one of Croatia’s most fascinating cities to explore – and it’s little wonder why. The mix of old and new may at first appear somewhat jarring to visitors, with ancient ruins lying in sharp contrast to modern cafes and restaurants, but these differences are what make Zadar such a liveable place, while maintaining a strong sense of its past. Read on to find out how you can best experience Zadar’s distinctive culture with my top things to do.

The Sea Organ

A serene encounter – sit (or lie!) down and immerse yourself in the sounds of local architect Nikola Baši?. The sea organ is a unique listening experience that uses the ocean waves to generate sounds through a system of pipes that are built within the stone chairs you sit upon - all for your enjoyment!

Land Gate

One of the real "must-sees" of Zadar, the Land Gate marks the entrance to the historic Old Town with style. Built in 1543 by the Venetians, the elaborate design of the city’s coat of arms features Zadar’s patron saint, St Chrysogonus.

Church of Saint Donatus

With impressive architecture and a rich history, this 9th century church was named after the bishop who commissioned it. The circular design is its main stand-out feature, with a modest interior that includes two intact Roman columns. St Donatus Church is one of the few original buildings from the early Croatian kingdom that survived the Mongol invasion in the 13th century.

The Sphinx

This glorious monument is something of an enigma in Zadar today. Located in the Bay of Maestral, the Sphinx is a memorial to Giovanni Smirich’s (local artist and historian) wife, Attilia. But, the rumours of buried treasure and the mysterious hieroglyphics on the monument have resulted in years of speculation from onlookers.

Zadar Markets

You haven’t seen the real Zadar until you’ve experienced the unmistakable energy of the weekend markets. Get in early for the best pick of local produce – try the fresh seafood or sweet Croatian delicacies for a true taste of Zadar.

Kaštel Restaurant

If the markets have got your taste buds tingling for Croatian cuisine, then Hotel Bastion’s fine-dining restaurant should more than satisfy your cravings. Traditional Croatian food with a contemporary twist: try the fresh tuna tartare from Pag Island or the delectable dessert figs on mascarpone and cinnamon ice-cream – wow!
