In the world of car sales, Nissan has had many successes over the years. However, not every car is an immediate hit, a number of factors can affect the sales of a car and sometimes the product doesn’t gel with the public. This has been the case with the Nissan Leaf, the first generation model was not a hit with Aussie car buyers, and it’s hard to understand why this is the case. As an electric car, it may simply be the case that people are unwilling to make a bold switch away from traditional fuel types. Nissan is undeterred, and they have announced that the new Nissan Leaf will be on sale in Australia. Let’s take a closer look at this car and some of the interesting questions it raises.

The 2018 Nissan Leaf:

The Leaf will make its debut next year, and it represents more than a simple car. In fact, it’s fair to say that the Leaf is part of a wider movement to pioneer the adoption of electric cars in Australia. The Leaf is the best selling electric vehicle here by volume, yet since its introduction back in 2012 it has still lost money for Nissan Australia. This next generation Leaf will debut globally next year, and it will be on sale here shortly after that.

A Changing Market?

Richard Emery is the boss of Nissan Australia, and he recently had a lot to say about the Nissan Leaf. When asked about the significance of the Leaf here in the past, he said "We put Leaf out there at launch in an environment, where it wasn’t a mainstream decision to buy an electric vehicle" he also said "it (the Leaf) remains Australia’s best selling electric car over the past few years". When asked about the 2018 Leaf release, Richard Emery said "We remain committed to it, irrespective from a market penetration of electric cars", he went on to say "we certainly will be with the new Leaf when the time comes, when it rolls out in right hand drive" and then he said "Nissan Australia will remain at the forefront of electric vehicles". It seems that Nissan is determined to make the Leaf a success and promote the adoption of electric vehicles here. At this point, perhaps the intention seems to be focused on changing attitudes rather than chasing purely commercial success.
