It is not uncommon for technicians to be unaware of the proper ways to handle a Drain Cleaning Cable. Many technicians make mistakes that can lead to the cable not functioning properly or, worse, serious injuries. There have been countless instances of technicians sending cable back to the distributor thinking that it is defective. In reality, it is only their mishandling of it that is causing it to not perform the way it is intended or to break. The cable cannot perform properly if it is not being used correctly. With that being said, it is necessary to understand the proper way to handle your drain cleaning cable in order to have a functioning cable and to keep yourself out of harm’s way.

The first common mistake occurs at the very beginning of a drain cleaning cable’s use. This mistake is improperly removing the cable from the carton. The proper way to remove a cable is to do so by removing the tagged end first. Technicians who do not know this often cause kinks to form in the cable. To further prevent kinks, you should take the entire length of the cable out and lay it flat on the floor, making sure you have the proper amount of space needed to keep the cable from getting caught on anything. The only time that this step is not necessary is when you are using a Reel Easy cable loader. Otherwise, all users should follow this rule to keep kinks from forming.

You must always keep in mind how much cable you are putting onto the reel. Another most common error that technicians make is overloading the reel with too much cable. The problem with doing this is that it can cause damage to the cable when it is being brought back into the reel. This is easily preventable. Instead of causing such unnecessary damage to the cable, just make sure that you are not putting too much cable onto the reel.

You should always make sure to tighten your PCFR tension knob - as long as you don’t make it too tight. Over-tightening the tension knob can cause damage to your cable and the bearings, creating a flat spot on the cable. If the bearings are damaged, the cable may shake as it is being fed down into a line. To keep your cable protected and sturdy, always make sure the tension knob is not too tight. But, of course, make sure that it’s tight enough to prevent other problems from happening.

Finally, another common mistake made among technicians is over-torqueing a drain cleaning cable. When a cable has too much torque, it is very likely that it will break due to its inability to release the tension. This buildup of tension will cause the cable to twist over itself. If this occurs while the cable is in a line, it becomes very difficult to remove it from the line, therefore causing you a whole new set of problems. So always be sure that you are not over-torqueing your cable so you do not have to worry about it breaking or becoming a hassle to remove.

Next time you’re handling cable and think it may be defective, make sure avoid these mistakes. To recap, make sure to remove cable by the tagged end, load a reasonable amount of cable onto the reel, adjust your PCFR tension knob to the proper tightness, and apply the correct amount of torque. These four areas are where technicians make the most mistakes when handling a drain cleaning cable. Remember these tips the next time you are handling cable so you don’t commit these common errors. This information will keep you and your equipment safe and will surely make you more productive.
