Welding is an essential component for any construction activity and getting the right weld is extremely important so as to make sure that the property is able to maintain its structural integrity.

Many things control the gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG) consumable selection. The major one among these factors is the "productivity". This is mainly because 85 percent of the cost for the creation of a weld is attributed to the labor productivity. Further, three important consumables are- contact tips, liners, and nozzles.

1. Contact Tips

The gas metal arc welding uses a wire and to transmit current to this wire, an electrical contact should be made with wire. Reason for this electrical contact is that it occurs through a contact tip that the wire is fed through. The size of the contact tip is corresponded to the diameter of the wire.

2. Liners

The electric wire is fed to the welding gun with the help of a cable liner and a steel spring coiled liner is required for steel applications. As these are steel liners, so these liners are rigid, have a long life and resist buckling. Aluminium applications need liners made from Teflon, nylon or some other type of plastic. As these materials have lesser friction than the steel, so they help in keeping the contamination out of the weld.

3. Nozzles

Nozzle is a pipe or tube that is used to modify or direct the flow of gas and water. Nozzles can be threaded as well as non-threaded and nozzles come in different sizes and shapes for different applications. Threaded nozzles are not at all easy to change whereas non threaded nozzles are easy to change. They are not tight as threaded nozzles and they do not have threads in them. Therefore, more effort is needed to change the threaded nozzles.

In addition to this, let us discuss the Types and Varieties of MIG Guns that should be used for welding:

The types of MIG guns are as follows:

Air Cooled: Air cooled guns need ambient air along with the shielding gas to dissolve the excessive heat. The power cable of an air cooled guns contain copper. As a result these guns are heavier.

Water Cooled: These guns require a radiator cooling system which circulates the ambient air, water and the shielding gas to dissolve heat from the gun.

The best MIG Welding consumable is the one which is offering high quality as well as longest life.
