Why You Need to Mow Your Lake

Whether you’re dealing with weeds, lily pads, algae, oil spills, or just plain old muck in your lake or pond, you have a choice when it comes to pond weed control products. There are plenty of options on the market, but in many cases, the most sustainable and effective method to manage your pond is to manually cut or mow the vegetation.

Municipal Water Feature Management

If you’re in charge of maintaining a municipal water feature for a park, school, or community, you have some specific challenges. Lakes and ponds in residential and school areas need to stay mosquito-free, non-toxic, and visually appealing. If you manage storm water ponds or facilities, you have to handle routine maintenance, understand where silt and sediment build up, and keep on top of all your responsibilities while also staying within budget. In many cases, chemical or ultrasonic products for pond weed control might seem to save money at first, but they can also have undesirable side effects.

Golf Courses

Golf courses can pose special challenges since the water features in a course are often used as an irrigation source for the rest of the course, so herbicides can be bad for the grass. Ponds also need to add to the visual appeal of the course and, in many cases, contribute to the strategic planning behind the course’s construction. Since fertilizer used on the rest of the course can run off into the water features, the associated nitrogen and phosphorous levels can make it even harder to gauge safe chemical usage in the ponds.

Private and Residential Ponds

Even if you don’t have to worry about municipal water management or golf course features, you still have a lot of choices to make as a private or residential pond or lake manager. Ultrasonic systems that work by breaking down the cells in the plant can be appealing because they don’t use chemicals. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about toxicity. However, they can take weeks to work and you might need to install more than one system if you have a larger pond or lake. They also don’t work very well for all types of weeds.

Herbicides and algaecides can be very effective pond weed control products, but some of them are less than ideal because they can burn your skin and be harmful to any fish or wildlife that live in or around your lake. If you’ve stocked your pond or lake with fish, you have to be especially aware of the delicate balance of its ecosystem and the effects on the food chain when you change any part of that ecosystem.
