Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fat from particular areas of the body.

Liposuction is done by removing fat via a cannula, which is a hollow metal tube that is passed through fatty tissue. The fat may be drawn out using a suction assisted liposuction (SAL) technique, wherein a pump is attached to the cannula to create a vacuum. Another technique that may be used to draw out fat is the power assisted liposuction (PAL), which involves using a motor on the cannula in order to move it back and forth and loosen the fat. The fat cells can also be broken down using a laser. Another method for fat removal is Body-jet Liposuction. In this technique, a jet spray is used to gather and remove fat cells. The benefit of this technique is that it causes less trauma to the tissues, thereby speeding up recovery time. You can use the procedure on almost any part of your body, and as long as make efforts to you keep up a healthy weight, the results are going to last long. The procedure typically lasts for about one to two hours, and is often performed as a day case. Wounds from the surgery will be closed with dissolving sutures, glued, and finally taped.

For the first four weeks after the surgery, you must avoid baths. However, showering is allowed from the morning following your surgery. Some bruising and swelling are to be expected, and a compression garment should be worn for at least six weeks after surgery. Also, avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for four to six weeks. Your surgeon will give you aftercare instructions and ask you to go back for regular check-ups.
