Indian spices are the stuff of tales. The sheer variety can take you by surprise. It seems like you know most of them only to realize that there are more. The usual dhaniya, jeera, raai, shahjeera, tej patta, kali mirch, ilaichi are more or less common names in every Indian household. Then there are the fresh varieties like methi, kadipatta, kottimeer, pudina. These are flavorful. They add a dash of color too. There are yet other spices like the javitri, jaiphal, chakra phool, dagad phool and so on that are used to enhance the taste of special dishes. These Indian spices are the pride of so many home cooks. Sometimes, they are also the secret ingredients to their signature dishes.

Generations of Indian mothers have resorted to Indian spices for uses beyond cooking. My grandmother used a combination of garlic with mustard oil for common aches and pains. As kids we found it amazing that she drove away pain with common kitchen ingredients. Over time we realized that there lies a body of wisdom waiting to be tapped in the Indian kitchen. This wisdom can be unveiled in every household with just a little bit of patience.

It is even more amazing for me as a person to realize that the health benefits of these spices are available to us in everyday cooking. Any Indian household in the whole of the country puts tadka. This seemingly simple process has the goodness of haldi, kadipatta, jeera and raai packed into it. Haldi or turmeric is a great antioxidant. Jeera or cumin seeds are great for digestion. Raai or mustard seeds and kadi patta or curry leaves are great store houses of phytonutrients. So it is a great idea to do tadka to dishes. It is amazing that the good old grannies of the Indian households knew all of these. Bless their souls for passing on these to latter generations.

As all things good get lost only to be discovered and revered again, Indian spices were lost a while when the rage for fast food took over. I guess the populace of just one generation ago took a fancy to fast food, especially the western menu. Thankfully, the present generation has become a lot more health conscious. They not only are choosy and picky about food but also practice eating right and healthy.

Food ordering apps have made it possible to eat simple, healthy, flavorful Indian food with a fair share of Indian spices. There are so many individuals and households who opt to order home-made meals over these apps in all the metros. Latest technological advancements in apps have made it possible to customize menus, provide instant feedback, appreciate and publicize it to the rest of the world.

Statistics confirm the rise of users across all metros. A simple search for order food online in Mumbai or any other metros of India will give you a glimpse of the popularity of this trend. Personally speaking, I am happy that food apps have made it possible to relish Indian spices again.
