When they think about Nissan cars, Australia based drivers probably don’t think of electric vehicles. In fact, the first generation Nissan Leaf was available for sale here, but it didn’t make much of an impact with the Aussie SUV loving customer base. However, Nissan to their credit haven't given up on their dream of marketing an electric vehicle down under. They have recently teased some information about the 2nd generation Leaf ahead of its debut, that should happen later this year. We’re going to take a look at the information that we have and try to make some educated guesses.

The Styling:

Obviously, on any released teaser for a concept or pre production car, the first thing we notice are the aesthetics. On a car this close to release, the released images are probably very close to what we will see later this year. The styling seems to be strongly influenced by the 2015 IDS concept which would make a lot of sense.

All Important Range:

On any kind of alternative fuel vehicle, people will always be very interested in the specifications. People are hungry for an electric vehicle that they can live with day to day in a form that is easy to fit into their lives. Nissan Osborne Park fans will be pleased to learn that the new Leaf is an electric hatch that has a new upgraded battery pack. On a full charge, the Leaf will have a driving range between 300 - 400km depending on how the power is used. This puts the Nissan Leaf into direct competition with the Tesla Model 3 at 345km and the Chevrolet Bolt at 383km. To put this into greater perspective, the 1st generation Nissan Leaf has a range of 135km with the standard battery and 172km with the larger 30kW power pack.

Some Pure Speculation:

A leaked report last year made a claim that Nissan planned to reduce the Leaf price by 30% for this release. This would make the Leaf slightly more costly than a mid spec Pulsar and would certainly drive sales. It has also been speculated that the new Leaf will feature the new ProPilot autonomous driving system, which will allow the car to steer, accelerate and brake itself within a highway lane.
