Why Shoppers Prefer Online Boutique Clothing

As a working professional with Fashion Degree, one of the most important subjects we had in fashion school was Fashion Retail Branding and Visual Merchandising. It was the subject wherein we discuss the importance of the branding of your own fashion retail store whether for an online or a physical store. How you present your products affects the customer’s buying behaviour in a number of ways, and one mistake could affect your monthly and even annual sales. Visual Merchandising is also important as it helps influence the customer’s line of sight and what to buy first and what’s tempting to buy. This is why items on sale or on clearance bins are always in up front because that’s the first thing you see upon entering the store, the same goes with why there are trinkets sold at the checkout counter, this is also why it is very important to update the vignette or window display of the fashion retail store once in awhile, in a consistent timeframe according to seasonal updates of your store’s stocks.

However, with the rise of internet users and its easy access among the people especially in America, consumers have been preferring to shop for online boutique clothing compared to their brick-and-mortar rivals. Aside from the fact that it’s readily available to the consumers whenever they have access to internet connection, comparing prices, browsing for available sizes and colors are also easier to deal with compared to physical stores that when a product you are looking for isn’t available, you would have to walk towards another store, and worse, drive towards another mall. This is what the consumers are sick of and are trying to avoid—the effort, money, and time wasted you can never take back again.

As explained more by Graham Charlton on his article in Econsultancy "Since online

cannot replicate everything about the instore fashion experience, brands need to provide features that aid decision making. The stats show the importance of effective filters on fashion sites that allow users to narrow their product selection, with 55% saying the ability to filter by size and colour makes them more likely to buy."

One of the advantages of online shopping is the availability and wide variety of boutique for plus sizes. Women who lean more on the side of being plus size are thankful for this innovation as it allows them to buy clothes without having to go through the prying eyes of other shoppers and it is easy for them to compare prices and find sizes fit for them.

According to an article in Forbes by Barbara Thau

"18% of respondents said "lower prices" was the main reason they bought "new frontier" items such as health and beauty products, toys/sports/hobby related merchandise, as well as clothing and furniture." Actually, when you compare the prices between an online boutique clothing against their brick-and-mortar rivals, it’s almost the same. However, some online boutiques for plus sizes offer free shipping or delivery that’s why consumers grab this opportunity because they have access to what they with just a few clicks away.
