Varalakshmi Vratham

Vraralakshmi Pooja or Vratha is an auspicious ceremony performed by women before the full moon day in the month of Shravan ( July/August ) and this year it falls on 4th August. This ceremony is mostly performed in the Soth Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh and Karnataka. The Pooja is performed to take blessings of the Goddess Lakshmi, who is the consort of Lord Vishnu. She is the Goddess of wealth,prosperity and auspiciousness.

Legends Behind Varalakshmi Vratham

As per legend, this Vratham was recommented by God Shiva to his consort Parvati to gain wealth and prosperity. Lord Shiva tell her the story of one lady Charumathi who was asked by the Goddess Lakshmi, in her dream, to observe the Vrat in order to fulfill her wishes. She observe the Vratham along with ladies in her village. They offered lots of delicacies and once the pooja was completed, the ladies were amazed to find their bodies with expensive jewels and their homes full of riches. From that day, every women started performing this Vrat every year seeking wealth and prosperity in their families.

Procedure for Performing Varalakshmi Puja

On the day of Puja, women clean their homes and put rangolis on their front yards. Later they deck themselves with new clothes and jewellery. They start the process by arranging the Kalasha. They fill the kalasha (pot) with rice which symbolize prosperity and cover it with mango leaves and place a coconut coated with turmeric on the Kalasha and decorated the coconut with a beautiful cloth and many kinds of jewels to make it look more beautiful. The puja starts by worshipping Lord Ganapathi, who is the remover of all obstacles and evil forces. After that Goddess Varalakshmi is invoked into the kalasha. Then they worship a bunch of nine threats with nine knots and tie one to the kalasha and other one is tied around the right hand of the women who performing this puja. They chant the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamam and offer sweets and savories. In the end of Vrat, they sing hyms in praise of Goddess. After that they invite all the neighbourhood ladies to their homes and offer tamboolam with fruits, turmeric and money.

Varalakshmi Homam

It is believed that performing Varalakshmi Homam on Varalakshmi day is equal to Worshipping Ashtalakshmi’s- the eight goddess. This homam is performed for the purpose of gaining wealth. Peoples who have financial problems may perform this homam to receive the blessings and grace of Goddess Varalakshmi.
