To obtain a coveted athletic scholarship in USA is not an easy task. A player could be one of the best in his team with a few good winner trophies under his belt, but when it comes to applying for an athletic scholarship in USA, it’s harder than you think. In order to get through a prestigious American college with a sports scholarship, you really need to assess yourself as a sportsman keeping all ego aside and that’s where an athletic assessment comes in handy to help you achieve your dream.

In order to apply for an athletic assessment test, one should first know as to what exactly is an athletic assessment. Largely this is a test where an expert of your chosen sport will observe you playing your game, on the basis of which it will be determined whether or not you are fit to get a sports scholarship. The expert may also watch you perform certain drills and your previous games’ records, academics as well as CV will be taken into consideration during the review process.

An athletic assessment is an extremely important step in order to get a sports scholarship and so the sooner you start, the better it will be for you. It will be exactly able to determine your strong areas as well as highlighting the areas that need more work and effort. Getting an early assessment test will help you work on your weaknesses in a way that you are able to mould yourself into an overall player by the time you actually start looking into colleges and applying for scholarships. Some students prefer to get yearly assessment tests done which is a fairly good practice. There are others who prefer to get assessed at the beginning of a season and then at the end in order to track their ‘through the season’ progress.

Very often there is a question that arises- Why can’t a student get an assessment test done by his own coach? And as convenient and easy that may sound, getting an assessment done from your own coach is a terrible idea because firstly your own coach could have biased opinions. They have taught you and seen you grown through the years and may overlook the weaknesses that otherwise may be very evident to others. Also, while assessing you, your coach will probably be comparing you to other school kids, not college athletes. Having worked with you for so long may give them a colored opinion of your sports versatility, something that could ruin your chances of getting into a college in the long run. Also, many coaches may not be well versed with the details of a US college sports recruiting process.

Thus, it is imperative that you get an athletic assessment done with a separate mentor, someone who knows the entire procedure correctly, can guide you in the right direction and can turn your golf or soccer scholarship in USA dream into a reality.
