True to his promise, President Donald Trump is cracking down on illegal immigrants – especially those involved in crime. Criminal activity instigated by undocumented immigrants was a major talking point during Trump’s campaign. Because most of these foreigners are undocumented, they are not in the government systems and are therefore more likely to participate in crimes. One of the very first things that Trump did after his inauguration was signing an executive order for the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico to keep away illegal immigrants. On Thursday, Congress approved a $1.6 billion dollar budget to construct the border wall. Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been rounding up undocumented aliens with previous criminal records. It seems that Trump’s presidency may have finally found a cure to criminal activities influenced by international criminals.

Recently, both the ICE and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have intensified efforts to bring down the MS13 gang. The Mara Salvatrucha, or MS13, is a dangerous street gang that has its inceptions in poor refugee-loaded neighborhoods of 1980s Los Angeles. MS13 operations now extend to Central American countries like El Salvador and Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The gang victimizes, blackmails and spooks their way into neighborhoods and have consequently extended their operations to transnational wrongdoings like human and drug trafficking.

President Trump has openly blamed the group for various street killings, even calling them animals. During a rally in Ohio, the president presented victims whose family members had been killed by the gang to the public. Trump has pledged to Make America Safe Again and getting rid of illegal immigrant criminal gangs is one way to deliver on that promise.

During a recent White House press briefing, the ICE acting director, Thomas Homan, gave reassurance to the public that the government was doing everything to eliminate the MS13 gang. Mr. Thomas also displayed pictures of MS13 gang members and tattoos most commonly associated with the group. The main aim of the pictures was to spread awareness about the gang’s presence to the public.

In the wake of Trump’s visit to Long Island, the federal government has made it very clear that it plans to focus its efforts on eliminating criminal activities, especially after a recent gruesome homicide involving members of MS13 in the area. The presidency of Donald Trump plans to increase the ICE officers from five thousand to at least fifteen thousand. Increasing the number of officers is meant to strengthen the fight against MS13. All illegal immigrants with previous criminal records will be detained and deported back to their home country.

The federal government has also asked states and cities to cooperate with law enforcement to help get rid of dangerous illegal immigrants. Some cities have regulations and laws that prohibit the unnecessary harassment of illegal immigrants. Also known as sanctuary cities, the laws in such areas are meant to remove fear from immigrants and enhance cooperation between them and the police. And as the war against MS13 intensifies, sanctuary cities have been reluctant to give in to the demands of the Federal government. Most of the sanctuary cities will not agree to change their laws because they do not want to antagonize the immigrant communities. But the federal government still believes that removing protection laws is the best way for these cities to evade crime and get rid of illegal immigrant gangs. On Tuesday, attorney general Jeff Sessions said that the federal government may shut down grants to sanctuary cities if they continue their resistance.

Time will tell whether or not sanctuary cities will accept the demands of the Federal government. As for now, the efforts of the Federal government are commendable since crime destroys society. Hopefully, Americans will feel more united and secure after most criminal policies are implemented and the crime rate goes down.
