Here we take you through our top 5 favourite cities in North Africa. In Egypt you could go on a diving holiday of a lifetime in Sharm El Sheikh, and explore ancient landmarks in Cairo. Or, in Morocco you could get lost in traditional medinas and creative enclaves in Tangier, Marrakesh and Casablanca. Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

The stunning resort city of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt offers visitors the perfect beachside holiday setting, surrounded by the Red Sea, with spectacular diving and snorkelling spots, and an array of gorgeous beaches. In the centre of Sharm El Sheikh you can enjoy Egypt’s traditional bazaars and the country’s fantastic food, including kebabs, koftas and kushari. And only 12 kilometres from Sharm El Sheikh is the world renowned Ras Muhammed National Park, with spectacular diving reefs, magical shipwrecks, over 200 species of coral, 1000 species of fish, plus sea turtles and sharks.

Cairo, Egypt

In Cairo you could visit the incredible Pyramids of Giza in a day trip, or stay in the heart of the city and wander around the back street markets of Khan al-Khalili to shop for spices and gold. Alternatively, head to the top of the central Cairo Tower and enjoy spectacular views of the city. Cairo is rich in historical buildings, including important mosques, plus diverse museums with artefacts dating back thousands of years. One of our favourites is the Egypt Museum where you can take a trip back in time. Finish your tour of Cairo by taking a cruise down the Nile on board a traditional sail boat.

Tangier, Morocco

Tangier is a beautiful Mediterranean beach city at the tip of Africa. As well as cool new boutique hotels, designer stores and cutting edge restaurants, in this vibrant city you can discover traditional medinas and colonial-era neighbourhoods. You will also find century-old open-air cafes boasting panoramic views of the Mediterranean, plus long esplanades and ocean boulevards lined with Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture. At night, the city comes alive with traditional club houses throbbing with live music, and classic venues serving up-to-the-minute cocktails.

Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and arguably its most progressive, where you'll find the country’s young creatives and business folk, and a uniquely cultural city rich in French colonial legacy. As well as being rich in history, the city boasts a number of modern developments that pay testament to Casablanca’s progressive attitude, such as its sleek central tram system and old industrial pockets being revitalised into cool trendy arts hubs. You could go on a world-class shopping spree and head to the city’s huge contemporary shopping malls, such as Galleries Lafayette.

Marakesh, Morocco

Marrakesh is a bustling and ancient city, with one of the world's largest open air markets in its central Medina. Head straight to the Medina and you will experience an assault on the senses, with loud calls to prayer echoing from its central Koutoubia Mosque (5 times daily), and exotic smells coming from its spice bazaars and cafes that serve fresh mint tea and sticky pastries throughout the day. Alternatively, visit the modern Gueliz district of the city and you will experience a creative enclave of galleries and ambitious new art spaces, especially along Rue de Yougoslavie.
