If street fashion is any indicator, sneakers are the hottest trend right now. But the trend does not belong to 2017. A trend that dates back to 1917 got an avant garde revival in 2015 in response to hip-hop and pop culture.

The Brooklyn Museum actually held an exhibition to explore this fact as well as the historical and cultural significance of what is known as the "sneaker culture". Sneakers have contributed comfort and style to world fashion just as T-shirts and jeans have done in their time.

Of course, there’s no looking back because the trend is here to stay for many years. No wonder, all the fashionistas out there can’t wait to shop till they drop, hunting down the latest, gaudiest designs from top stores on fashion street.

The basketball sneaker made its fashion debut with Converse's All Stars featuring Chuck Taylor, with his signature on the side. That was also the start of sportsmen associating with sneaker brands. First, came the fans who loved the players they idolised; then they began wearing what their heroes were endorsing.

Next came Air Jordan sneakers, made famous by iconic basketball player Michael Jordan. Nike made billions out of the deal, despite the fact that Jordan himself was fined each time he wore it to play as the shoes were not white-coloured as stipulated by basketball rules. Nike picked up Jordan’s fine tab and the fans went into greater frenzy.

Not just sports, music also showcased sneaker fashion, notably Run-DMC’s album Raising Hell featured a track "My Adidas", a reference to Adidas’ Superstar sneaker that had a rubber toe cap and now well-known three stripes on its side.

Today, models wear sneakers on the catwalk, pairing it with all kinds of clothes. You bet, some comfort could help the models, but hey today, it’s pure fashion need that driving these sneakers on to the ramp. Instead of sneakers matching clothes, the trend seems to be going the opposite way: dresses are matching sneakers, with fashionable clothes becoming more comfortable and comfortable clothes becoming fashionable.

Seeing the way the sneakers are going, the top-selling brands seem keen to blend fashion and sports in their branding. Of course, that has, predictably, led to what has been labelled as the sneaker wars.

In India, a leading online fashion portal like Myntra brings a variety of sneakers for a discerning audience. Vans, a leader in sneakers worldwide, can be found on Myntra too. The White Low Top sneaker – a hot trend that’s already sweeping streetwear – is available on Myntra via 20Dresses.

The Embroidered Sneaker is a breathtakingly beautiful trend from abroad that you can buy on Myntra as well. Platform shoes, by their very definition, give you the extra inches which you may need after moving away from high heels. Puma’s Pink Vikky platform Sneakers for women, available on Myntra, might be just the boost you need, literally and metaphorically.

If Trainers are your taste, choose leading sports brand Puma’s training shoes. A Slip-On Sneaker is for those in a great hurry, who don’t want to bother with lacing up, but just want to slip on their shoes. Choose Aldo’s White-Textured Mid-Top Slip-On Sneakers.
