A Brief History of Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital:

The Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB), established in 1951, is the premier voluntary organisation in Malaysia that meets the needs of visually impaired persons to provide services that help the blind and prevent the casualty of avoidable blindness.

In its long years of operation and service, the association gained more precedence, when Yang Amat Berhormat (YAB) Tun Hussein Onn became the chairman of the MAB in 1975. Incidentally, YAB Tun Hussein Onn happens to be the third prime minister of Malaysia, serving office from 1976 to 1981.Prior to his Prime Minister-ship, YAB Onn had served as the deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, from, 1973 to 1976.

It can be said that the Prime Minister’s chairmanship of MAB had led to his special attention towards the problem of visual impairment among his country’s population. Upon completion of his tenure in 1981, YAB Onn dedicated his life towards several welfare organisations and his most important contribution was the setting up of the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The THONEH, since its institution in 1986, happens to be the premier institution to provide professional eye care to Malaysians, to educate the people on prevention measures to avoid unnecessary blindness, and to manage disorders which may lead to loss of vision.

In its subsequent years of operation, the THONEH expanded its scope of service by setting up Sub-Speciality Clinics around the year 1988, with focus on research and training of eye care professionals.

In 1996, the THONEH took a step further by setting up a National Eye Bank for procurement of eye donors and to assist the hospital in its corneal transplant operations. A year later, an in-house college namely National Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences (NIOS), was established.

This institute served as an educational arm for the THONEH, consisting of the three specialised schools of research in ophthalmic studies, the School of Ophthalmic Medical Personnel, the School of Optometry and the School of Post Graduate Studies & Research.Currently, THONEH operates in a diverse installation with facilities such as NIOS, diagnostic centres, eye bank, laser centres, cornea and refractive surgery centres, etc. housed inside it.

On the other side, THONEH has been recognised for consistently providing excellent services in eye care by its reception of the SMEs Chapter Award 2009 and the Best Brands Healthcare Eye Hospital by the Asia Pacific Brand Foundation (APBF).The growth of the institution to such high levels can be attributed by its sub-speciality clinics that provide specific services.

Separate clinics have been set up for cataract, optometry, ocular prosthesis, corneal eye disease, etc. for their respective treatments and, of these specialised centres, THONEH Advanced LASIK Centre stands out.LASIK is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

THONEH offers refractive surgery services such as ReLEx SMILE, LASIK, Photorefractive Keratectomy, etc. through its Advanced LASIK Centre. The major advantages of the LASIK process is that it provides a permanent solution to the above eye problems.

With other advancements alongside, the vision of YAB Onn to provide vision through THONEH continues growing!
