Creating an Oil Painting is the art of painting with pigments that are bound though a medium of drying oil. Common drying oils used to create a typical Oil Painting include safflower oil, linseed oil, poppy seed oil and walnut oil. These oil paints are applied on a support which is generally made from material such as canvas, paper, wood, fiber boards and metals.

Oil Painting Supports

Below-mentioned are some of the materials used to make Oil Painting Supports:

  • Canvas: It is the most popular surface used by artists. Traditional artist canvas is made from linen. The artist needs to prepare a wooden frame called ‘stretcher’ first and then the canvas is pulled across the wooden frame. It is available in a variety of dimensions, quality and textures.
  • Linen Support: It is made from the fibers of flax plant. It is a favorite amongst artists as it makes a durable painting support. A variety of linen canvases can be easily found; the common ones including rolled canvas and pre-stretched canvas.
  • Cotton Canvas: It is very popular amongst the beginners. It is a strong material and cheaper as compared to linen support. It is available in rolls or pre-stretched, primed or unprimed canvas structures.
  • Canvas Pads: Canvas Pads are very economical and they are available in a variety of sizes. It is advisable to use a heavy weight canvas pad which can hold oil paint.
  • Hardboard: A very popular painting support for artists, it is inexpensive and rigid.
  • Wood Panels: Earlier the paintings were created on wood panels made of oak. They had to be covered with a uniform ground made of animal skin glue. It is expensive and difficult to carry around. Plywood is an alternative for those who wish to use a wood surface for their paintings.

Choosing An Oil Painting Support:

The support is an integral part of a painting. Each artist must choose the support according to their painting requirements. While highly polished aluminum support allows thin transparent colors to appear metallic, coarse linen allows the weave to be seen easily under the primer and support.

Choosing A Frame:

Usually, the frame style is chosen depending on the kind of painting. Paintings on classical subject are best suited to a traditional and elegant gold leafed frame. Lighter or ethereal paintings are well suited in a sleek frame. For the paintings in between the classic and ethereal, transitional frames are apt.
