If you are a dog owner, it is your desire to have a playful and obedient dog. Nothing is more rewarding for you when your pet displays good habits in front of a guest. If you are jealous of the good behavior of your neighbor’s dog and remain frustrated that your dog embarrasses you with his tantrums, you need to train your dog. Here are some simple but very effective training tips that will turn your aggressive dog into a very obedient pet.

Keep your training sessions short

Dogs have very short attention span which is much less than human beings. You cannot hope to teach something to your dog by expecting him to give his attention to you for 15-20 minutes.

Do not overwhelm your dog

Do not bombard your dog with orders and commands. He will easily become confused and become nervous. Do not try to teach him many tricks and habits in a single session. His brain is not programmed to pay attention to so many commands.

Use the same word each time for a command

Many dog owners make the mistake of using different words for a single command. This confuses the dog and he is not able to learn it. Be consistent and use the same word for a particular command. Your dog catches your words through sounds and your mannerisms. You can make it easier for your dog by being consistent in your selection of words. Keep confined to jump or sit when you want your dog to jump or sit rather than using phrases.

Be consistent with rewards

Dogs learn a trick quickly when they find they are rewarded for showing that behavior. However, you need to be consistent in rewarding your dog. If you give him his favorite biscuit for sitting once but forget to give it again when he repeats the behavior, conditioning of his reflexes will not be proper and solid.

Get professional help

No matter whether your dog belongs to a violent and aggressive breed, you have to teach him to be social. He has to learn how to react and behave within in the company of human beings. You also need to teach him to behave well with small kids. If you think it is beyond your capabilities to teach your dog how to behave, it is prudent to take help from a professional dog trainer. Professional training in a one on one setting makes it sure that your dog picks up tricks and learns to behave in a socially accepted behavior.
