Fans of the Mazda CX lineup have been eagerly awaiting some announcements on the new lineup. A fresh look at the forthcoming Mazda CX-8 has been revealed for the first time. At the moment we only have a glimpse of this new car and only the exterior styling has been revealed. However, from this information, we can make some educated guesses about the CX-8 and indeed some of the other new cars in the CX stable.

The CX-8 in Profile:

For now, our view of the Mazda CX-8 has been limited to the exterior styling, showing the profile of the car for the first time. The roofline is subtly tapered, and there appears to be an even bolder kink around the D pillar. However, when compared to the images of the CX-9, we can see that the differences between these siblings are far less pronounced that industry insiders had predicted.

Big in Japan:

There is likely to be little confusion regarding the CX-8 and its comparison to the CX-9 outside of Japan. This is because the Mazda CX-8 will only be available as a Japanese market release. These three row seater will not be offered elsewhere unless there is a change in the future. The Mazda CX-9 is also built in Japan, it has been bought overseas in small numbers and only ever as an exported car.

The Mazda CX-8 Dimensions:

The styling on the CX-8 may only appear to have superficial differences compared to the CX-9, but this is not the case. The CX-8 has smaller dimensions that are perfectly suited to Japanese road conditions. Both the CX-8 and the CX-9 have the same 2,930mm wheelbase, but the CX-8 is actually shorter overall at 4,900mm compared to the CX-9 at 5,075mm. The CX-8 is 1,840mm wide, compared to the CX-9 which is 1,969mm in width. Finally, the CX-8 is 1,730mm tall, which is 17mm less than the CX-9 at 1,747mm in height.

The CX-8 Powertrain:

The CX-8 also has a different powertrain, a 2.2 litre turbo diesel powerplant, that generates 129 kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The rest of the world gets the CX-9 that has a 2.5 litre turbocharged petrol unit that generates 170kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The CX-8 joins the CX-4 as being the second new Mazda SUV that will not be available in Australia.
