Beaches

Just over an hour’s drive from the heart of Accra are incredible white sandy beaches and historical coastal towns. In the coastal towns of Cape Coast and Elmina you'll find World Heritage sites in old forts and castles, alongside some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country. In Cape Coast you can experience a laid back coastal community vibe, plus a World Heritage castle, where you can explore the region’s long history. A few kilometres from Cape Coast is Elmina, a pretty coastal town with impressive historical sights and several beach resorts. Travel further west and you will find the popular resort of Busua, with lively stretches of sand, and some of the country’s best surfing beaches.

National Parks

In Kakum National Park, the jewel in Ghana’s natural crown, you will find tropical rainforests that provide sanctuary to a range of wildlife, including endangered monkeys and herds of elephant that you can spot from canopy walkways. Mole National Park is another top National Park in Ghana, covering a massive 4500 square kilometres, offering popular hiking routes and a number of accommodation options. In Bia National Park you will find some of the tallest trees in West Africa, and places you can camp overnight, whilst in Kyabobo National Park, you will find hundreds of species birds and butterflies. Finally, the Boin Tano Forest Reserve plays an important role in Ghana’s approach to conservation, and houses many endangered birds and mammals.

The Volta Region

The Volta Region on the eastern border of Ghana is an area of incredible natural beauty. It contains the highest mountains in Ghana, as well as caves, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and National Parks to explore. Lake Volta is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, with a National Park on its shores containing breathtaking forests and a range of wildlife. The Black Volta River, winding from Burkina Faso, provides the ideal spot for canoe rides and river cruises, where you can sport hippopotamuses in their natural habitat. Bui National Park, the third largest in Ghana, cuts through the Black Volta River, and here you can see antelopes and monkeys roaming free. Finally, Wli Waterfalls, in the heart of the region, offers breathtaking hikes, and the highest waterfall in West Africa.
