3 Factors to Bear in Mind When Buying Travel Insurance

There is a lot to do when you go through the process of buying travel insurance – compare all the deals, look for the cheapest prices and also look for the most appropriate policy you can find. However, while there are lots of things you should do, there are also plenty of things you shouldn’t do! We’ve listed three of the most important ones here. Are you guilty of overlooking any of them?

Don’t buy the first policy you see

When you have just booked a holiday and you are excited at the prospect of going abroad, the last thing on your mind is likely to be travel insurance. Compare, however, the prospect of going abroad with no cover to the peace of mind you will get when you know every eventuality is accounted for – it's a no brainer. It is undoubtedly worth spending that little bit of extra time considering your needs: is a single trip basic policy the best bet, or is a multi-trip or family policy better in your situation?

Don’t neglect to declare any medical conditions

This applies not just to you, but also to all other members of your family or party if you are covering them on one policy. Some people think they will automatically be charged more if they have one or more medical conditions, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Oftentimes insurers just want further information before they commit to a policy. If the condition is mild or well managed with medication, for example, it may make no difference financially at all.

However, even if you do have to pay more for your travel insurance, compare policies from different insurers to get the best deal in your situation. Once the condition or illness is declared and you have your policy in place, you know you will be covered in the event of a flare up or problem related to that illness or condition.

Don’t forget to check the details so you know whether activities are covered

Not all policies cover all situations. When you buy travel insurance, compare the small print to see whether it has any clauses in place for specific activities. If you plan to go skiing or take part in anything similarly high-octane, check the details. You may need a different policy to cover the activities you intend to do.

As you can see, while we always focus on the must-do facts of getting cover, we don’t always focus what not to do. This article shows how important it can be to make sure you do both. Doing so will ensure you can have confidence you have chosen the best policy for your holiday and situation.
